From shadows to spotlight: Sunetra Pawar prepares to step into Maharashtra power centre

Sunetra Pawar is set to step into Maharashtra’s power centre as deputy chief minister following the death of her husband Ajit Pawar.

Sunetra Pawar is likely to take oath as Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister on Saturday evening, marking a decisive shift in her political journey that has largely remained out of the public eye for nearly four decades.

Born Sunetra Patil, she was familiar with politics long before marrying Ajit Pawar in 1985. Her father Bajirao Patil was a prominent local leader, and her brother also remained active in public life. Despite this background, Sunetra Pawar chose not to contest elections for years, instead contributing to political decision-making quietly as the Nationalist Congress Party played a key role in Maharashtra and national politics.

That changed after the NCP split in 2023, when Ajit Pawar broke away from his uncle Sharad Pawar and laid claim to the party’s name and symbol. A year later, Sunetra Pawar entered electoral politics, contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Baramati against her sister-in-law Supriya Sule. She lost the contest by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes but was elected to the Rajya Sabha a few months later.

Her political trajectory took a dramatic turn on Wednesday after a plane crash claimed the life of Ajit Pawar and four others. The development has placed Sunetra Pawar at the centre of Maharashtra’s political landscape.

At 62, and still coping with personal loss, she is expected to take charge as the NCP legislature party leader and assume the role of deputy chief minister, stepping into a position long associated with her husband’s political influence.

Education and public initiatives

Born in October 1963, Sunetra Pawar holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from SB College in Aurangabad. After her marriage, she was associated with the Baramati High-Tech Textile Park, where she was involved in decision-making related to production, investment, employment, and women’s empowerment.

She is also a trustee of Vidya Pratishthan, an educational group that caters to over 25,000 students.

In 2010, she founded the Environmental Forum of India, which played a role in developing Katewadi village as the country’s first eco-village, focusing on water conservation and solar energy use. Her work has included grassroots campaigns on biodiversity protection, water management, and drought mitigation.

Swearing-in and political challenges ahead

Sunetra Pawar is expected to be sworn in at 5 pm on Saturday, following discussions within the party that led to her agreeing to take up the responsibility.

NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that many within the party believe she should be given the role, adding that the vacant deputy chief minister’s post could be filled by her. He also indicated that a meeting would be held to elect the legislature party leader.

NCP working president Praful Patel said the party was united on the decision.

One of the key political questions ahead of Sunetra Pawar’s tenure will be whether the NCP should pursue reunification with the Sharad Pawar faction. Party sources have said Ajit Pawar was working towards a reunion before his death, though the political dynamics may now shift.

Any reunification would also raise questions about future leadership and political alignment, as Ajit Pawar’s faction is currently aligned with the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, while the Sharad Pawar group remains with the Congress and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.

EPS removes C Ve Shanmugam, other AIADMK leaders from party posts after pro-Vijay stand

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami removed senior leaders including C Ve Shanmugam from party posts after a section of MLAs backed Chief Minister Vijay in the Tamil Nadu Assembly floor test.

Tamil Nadu politics witnessed fresh turmoil on Wednesday after AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami removed senior leaders, including C. Ve. Shanmugam, from party positions following their support to Chief Minister Vijay during the Assembly floor test.

The disciplinary action came hours after Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won the confidence motion in the Tamil Nadu Assembly with support from several opposition MLAs, including a section of AIADMK legislators.

According to reports, the AIADMK leadership acted against leaders accused of defying the party whip during the trust vote. The rebellion was led by senior figures such as Shanmugam and S P Velumani, who had openly questioned Palaniswami’s leadership in recent days.

Speaking after the action, Shanmugam defended the rebel camp and questioned the legality of the whip appointment process within the party. He alleged that newly elected MLAs should first convene to elect the legislature leader and whip instead of direct appointments being made by the party chief.

The internal rift within AIADMK has intensified since the formation of the Vijay-led government in Tamil Nadu. Reports suggested that around 30 AIADMK MLAs extended support to the new administration, creating fears of a major split within the party.

Meanwhile, Vijay thanked legislators who backed his government during the confidence vote and said the new administration would function in the interest of the people of Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen travelling with a significantly smaller convoy in Delhi, with visuals showing only two vehicles accompanying him instead of the larger motorcade usually associated with VVIP movement.

The video, which quickly went viral on social media, showed the Prime Minister travelling in a Range Rover and a Toyota Fortuner during movement in the national capital. Reports said the reduction is part of a broader austerity and fuel-conservation initiative being implemented by the government.

Normally, the Prime Minister’s convoy includes around 12 to 15 vehicles, such as armoured cars, escort vehicles, jammer units, decoy cars and an ambulance under Special Protection Group (SPG) security arrangements. Officials, however, clarified that mandatory security protocols remain intact despite the reduction in the convoy size.

SPG implementing revised convoy measures

According to reports, the SPG has already started implementing the revised convoy arrangements during the Prime Minister’s recent visits to Gujarat, Assam and Hyderabad. The move is being seen as part of efforts to encourage fuel conservation and sustainable practices amid rising global energy concerns.

The development comes days after PM Modi appealed to citizens to reduce fuel consumption, use public transport where possible and adopt austerity measures in view of global uncertainties impacting energy markets.

Reports also suggested that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several other ministers have started reducing convoy sizes and reviewing fuel-saving measures in their respective departments.

Congress leader Pawan Khera appeared before the Assam Crime Branch in Guwahati on Wednesday in connection with the ongoing passport controversy case linked to Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.

The investigation began after allegations were made by Congress leaders claiming that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possessed multiple passports and had overseas business interests. Following the remarks, an FIR was filed and Assam Police initiated a probe into the matter.

Khera arrived in Guwahati after being directed to cooperate with the investigation. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court had granted him anticipatory bail while asking him to participate in the probe whenever summoned by the authorities.

The controversy has triggered sharp political exchanges between the Congress and the BJP in Assam over the past several weeks. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had strongly denied the allegations made against his wife and warned of legal action.
