Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has resigned from his post on Tuesday. Rawat submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya. Rawat, after his resignation, said that he had been in politics for a long time starting with the RSS and that he had never imagined to be a Chief Minister one day. Serving as a CM was a golden opportunity, he added.

The development came a day after Rawat met BJP president JP Nadda and senior ministers in New Delhi. After this, there was speculation that the BJP was mulling a change of guard at the helm in Uttarakhand after several ministers and MLAs expressed apprehensions over Rawat’s working style.

On Saturday, the BJP leadership sent former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and senior leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam as observers to meet state leaders and collect feedback. A party insider said the two met members of the core committee and took their opinion and submitted the report to the BJP leadership. It is learnt that the report mentioned that it will be difficult for the party to win next year’s assembly polls with Rawat as the face of the BJP.

Congress leader and former CM Harish Rawat said no matter who the BJP brings in, they will not return to power in 2022. Speaking on the turmoil in Uttarakhand, he said that he can see a possible change of head of government. Even the BJP’s central leadership has admitted that its present government in the state could not do much, the Congress leader said.

Gautam, who met the dissenters against Trivendra Singh Rawat, told the media, ahead of Rawat’s decision to resign, that the CM was doing good work and it wasn’t good to raise questions on his working style.

The BJP is also likely to reshuffle the Cabinet. Rawat was named the chief minister by the BJP after it came to power in 2017, winning 57 of the 70 seats in the Assembly.
