Panelists questions why Unnao rape accused MLA is still in BJP
The Unnao rape survivor — whose complaint sent a BJP MLA to jail — was on her way to meet her uncle who is lodged in a jail in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district when a speeding truck crushed the car she was travelling in along with her relatives and lawyer. The rape survivor and her lawyer, who was driving the car, are both critically injured while the girl’s aunt and aunt’s sister have succumbed to injuries. APN’s popular debate Mudda discussed the issue. Anchorperson Akshay Singh posed the questions to panelists including the NCP’s Mahesh Chauhan, noted scribe Sunil Kaushik, political affairs expert Fazil Ahmed and APN consultant Govind Pant Raju.
Kaushik said: “Why was the truck’s number plate wiped out? It looks like it was a pre-planned incident. CBI officers have not reached, so is there high-level pressure in this case?”
Chauhan said: “We want an unbiased investigation. Earlier, the allegation was that the police was going slow, then the HC had to intervene. The victim’s uncle is in jail. Now the victim is on life support, doubts are bound to arise on the role of politicians in this case.”
Raju said: “From the beginning, this has been a high profile case, the victim’s uncle is in jail, now her relatives have got killed in this accident…Earlier there were allegations that the victim is being threatened. The victim was given security. If the victim was being threatened, then why was her security compromised? This shows that despite the nature of the case, the police has been lax. Investigations are now nearly complete in this case, but there should be further probe on the allegations of meddling.”
Kaushik said: “It is the responsibility of the government to quell doubts in people’s minds about allegations of pressure. Why does BJP have to retain such MLAs? We can see that there has been some level of laxity, some loophole is there, even the family should have been cautious. They should have insisted on security in the car.”
Chauhan said: “Had the security personnel been there, they would also have been hurt or killed. So was their absence deliberate or planned? This needs to be looked into.”
Raju said: “If a CBI probe is carried out, many questions will be answered. “
Kaushik said: “The driver was absconding and later arrested, he was allegedly under the influence of liquor. The truck driver’s role should be investigated. Why was the uncle in jail, this too should be looked into.”
Raju said: “So far what has emerged is that the speeding truck led to the collision. Every other day, one hears of such mishaps on roads. So we can’t be too hasty in adding two plus two. The driver ran away, as in such cases, usually, drivers look for a safe haven after a mishap. We can’t ignore conspiracy or the play of some sort of pressure in this, but at the same time we can’t say anything definite too so far.”
Chauhan said: “Where was this truck going, what was it transporting? Did it have purchase order? Why is the MLA involved in this case continuing to be in BJP? What are the findings of the rape case so far?“
Raju said: “There are tainted members in every party. The long arm of the law seldom gets to the influential. But we have to wait for the probe team’s analysis.”
Chauhan said: “People lose faith in the system if action is not taken against culprits.”
Ahmed said: “This looks like a complete conspiracy. Those even with some amount of money are able to get away with crimes of all sorts. People think that CBI will be able to handle the cases, but I am of the opinion, cases should be probed by the police.”
Kaushik said: “It is not a question of a police probe or a CBI probe. People’s inner conscience is weak, and that’s why many victims suffer and fail to get justice.”
Ahmed said: “Probe agencies should be free from local and political pressures, so as to make the system more responsive towards victims.”
