Mudda panellists feel something more is needed than merely an “oust Modi campaign” for an impact, time for negative politics is over, must find a common minimum plan
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged ahead of the ruling CPI(M) in the assembly elections in Left bastion Tripura, emerging as the dominant party even in the Northeast. Is there a Narendra Modi wave? What will be the agenda of the Opposition parties? Is it going to be only to oust Modi? Who will be the leader of the anti-Modi platform? These and similar questions were discussed at APN’s popular debate Mudda. Anchorperson Akshay Gaur posed the questions to BJP’s Anand Sahu, Congress’ Ajay Verma, CPI’s Amir Haider Zaidi, political commentator Shehzad Poonawala and APN consultant Govind Pant Raju.
Poonawala said the point is that the alternative to the BJP is not good enough. “Rahul Gandhi lost Meghalaya, but he has not put out a single tweet. On the other hand, Amit Shah and Modi are meeting cadres. The BJP does not need to do much, 2019 will be very bad for the Congress,” he said.
Verma said everybody is watching the shenanigans of the government; and how horse-trading is going on. “There is a lot of gap between what the BJP promises and its agenda,” he said
Poonawala wanted proof of allegations that state governors are behaving like puppets, especially in Meghalaya, as pointed out by the Congress representative.
Sahu said Modi believes in “sabka sath, sabka vikas. He has been on a nationwide tour, development is his aim. This message has reached Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, and the Left graph is also down”.
Poonawala said during elections in the Northeast, the Congress leadership was missing from action. Staking claim after results is not good enough, he said. “The BJP made inroads despite the Nirav Modi scam. The Congress needs to put up more than a negative campaign. Rahul needs to come to Delhi from Rome.”
Zaidi said the opposition needs to be united. “At the UP polls, note ban was an issue; in the Northeast polls, it was all about Nirav Modi… the youth appears to be happy with pakodas. The point is that winning in the Northeast was no big deal for Modi, it was like an elephant fighting the ants,” Zaidi said.
Sahu said the BJP has layers of cadres; that remain fully devoted to the leadership. Verma said Sonia Gandhi had “met leaders of the opposition parties in the past. We will go to the janta (masses)”.
Poonawala said Rahul went to Tripura just hours before the close of elections. “No one wants to join forces with Rahul,” he said.
Raju said issues need to be zeroed down for the opposition to get together on.
Poonawala said the smaller parties are still learning.
Sahu said the BJP completely understands the pain of the people, which is why it has been getting such a strong mandate.
Poonawala insisted that the Congress leader will have to be back in Delhi. “Rahul went to meet his grandmother, he has not met Akhilesh or Mamata,” he said.
Zaidi said Modi needs to offer more than a pakoda option to the common man.
Raju said in India’s politics, personality matters. “A united front needs to be forged out on issues of national interest,” he said.
