Why Brazil won’t win the World Cup

World Cup 2022 in Qatar

As the Round of 16 ended, showcasing some unexpected performances by numerous underdogs, as well as the marquee names in the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The teams in the quarterfinals are Croatia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Argentina, Morocco, Portugal, England, and France.

The quarterfinals are anticipated to be among the most competitive in the history of the World Cup. This assumption comes in the light of England and France scheduled clash. France will be locking horns with England to qualify for the semifinals. Tournament favourites Brazil will be locking horns with Croatia, who ended Japan’s dream in penalties. Leo Messi and company will be taking on the Netherlands in their fixture.

Underdogs Morocco will be hoping to pull off another act similar to what they did with Spain against their Iberian neighbours Portugal. The quarter-final fixture for all the countries can’t be termed a mismatch as each team will be contesting to snatch a win.

But are Brazil that invincible? Some have claimed the Selecao is being credited for more than what it deserves as many saw gaps in the Thiago Silva-led team.

Problems Brazil can face

The Brazilian football team, who are famous for their easy style as opposed to modern football’s press-press-and-press, has shown its gaps. Despite having big names like Neymar, Vinicius Jr, Raphinha, Thiago Silva, and Casemiro, the team still seems to lack in many aspects of the game.

Despite the big names, it lacks depth in the squad especially owing to Neymar being among the most vulnerable players in the squad. Neymar recently suffered an ankle injury against Cameroon which put a question mark on his return in the World Cup. However, Neymar returned to find space on the scoresheet against South Korea. Hence, if Brazil loses Neymar likely due to injury issues, they would fail to fill that void.

Not only Neymar but also the gaps in Brazil’s midfield and defence have been clearly visible. The defence solely relies on captain Thiago Silva as his teammates, at best, are not known for their consistency namely Militao and Alex Sandro, and even Danilo.

The midfield’s lack of consistency is also prone to questions. A seasoned Casemiro is not enough to cover up Fred’s sloppiness and won’t help against big teams such as France or England.

The only thing that Brazil has found till now is a reliable conveyor of the ball into the net, Richarlisson. But can he foil the defence of better managed teams like France or even the Netherlands under Van Gaal, provided the Dutch escape the Messi trap?

Fixtures for FIFA World Cup and where can you see it?

Croatia will face Brazil on December 9 at 8:30 pm; the Netherlands will clash with Argentina on December 10 at 12:30 am; followed by Portugal locking horns with Morocco; a much-anticipated clash between England and France will be played on December 11 at 12:30 am. The second match of the 3-match ODI series between India and Bangladesh is being played in Dhaka. Bangladesh skipper decided to bat first after winning the toss at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.

In the first match of this series, India had to face defeat by a margin of one wicket. Team India would like to win this match and equalize the series but host Bangladesh are in no mood to let the series slip of their hands.

First they set a target of 272 runs for India to chase and now the host are making Indian batter beg for single runs. In three overs, Men in Blue have just made just 13 runs, plus the team has lost its most precious wickets of opener Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Mehidy Hasan! Man of the moment

Batting first, Bangladesh has set a target of 272 runs in front of India. Mehidy Hasan scored a fine century for Bangladesh. At the same time, Mahmudullah played a brilliant inning of 77 runs. Both of them shared a record partnership of 148 runs for the seventh wicket. In the end, Nasum Ahmed scored 18 runs in 11 balls to take his team’s score beyond 250 runs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Bangladesh did not have a good start. Enamul Haque got out after scoring just 11 runs. By this time Captain Liton Das could not even open his account. He then shared a 28-run partnership with Najmul Hasan Shanto, but Liton Das was also dismissed after scoring seven runs in 23 balls. After this, Bangladesh team kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Shanto at 21, Shakib Al Hasan at 8, Mushfiqur Rahim at 12 and Afif Hussain was dismissed without opening the account.

In 19 overs, Bangladesh had lost six wickets on the score of 69 runs. The Indian bowlers were in excellent touch with Washington Sundar taking three wickets. Siraj took two and Umran took one wicket. All the bowlers bowled economically, but after that Mehdi and Mahmudullah turned the match around. There was a 148-run partnership between the two for the seventh wicket. The pair first batted slowly to put on a half-century partnership and then scored quickly. These two took Bangladesh’s score from 69 to 217.

Skipper Rohit Sharma is retired hurt

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was injured while fielding in the second over of this match. He has injured his thumb. Bangladesh’s Enamul Haque gave an easy catch in the slip off Siraj’s ball, but Rohit could not catch it properly. The ball hit his thumb and soon blood started to flow out. He immediately left the field and was taken to the hospital for the scan. Rajat Patidar was seen fielding in his place. At the same time, Lokesh Rahul was captaining Team India.

Rohit’s injury has added to India’s woes as the skipper did not turn up for opening the Indian innings. The absence of captain Rohit can prove to be a big blow for India. However, it is not yet clear how serious Rohit’s injury is.
