SRH’s new star shines as Sri Lanka crush New Zealand by 140 runs in Auckland

Eshan Malinga delivers a fiery spell against New Zealand in the 3rd ODI.

Eshan Malinga’s sensational bowling performance has captured attention, as he played a key role in Sri Lanka’s dominant 140-run victory over New Zealand in the 3rd ODI. The 23-year-old seamer, who was recently signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 1.20 crore at the IPL 2025 auction, dismantled the New Zealand batting lineup with a fiery spell, claiming three wickets and leaving the hosts reeling early in their innings.

Malinga, now touted as SRH’s new death-bowling weapon, delivered a remarkable spell of 7 overs, 1 maiden, 35 runs, and 3 wickets at an economy of 5.00. Supported by Asitha Fernando and spinner Maheesh Theekshana, he led a devastating performance with the ball. His 3-26 spell, marked by pace and precision, tore through New Zealand’s top order, reducing them to 21-5 within seven overs. The trio accounted for nine of the ten wickets, with Fernando and Theekshana also taking three wickets apiece.

New Zealand’s chase of Sri Lanka’s 290-8 never gained momentum after the top-order collapse. The home side eventually folded for 150 runs in just 29.4 overs, with only Mark Chapman offering resistance. Chapman played a valiant knock of 81 runs off 81 balls, but his effort wasn’t enough to rescue his team. Chapman’s dismissal, bowled by Theekshana, sealed New Zealand’s fate.

Earlier, Sri Lanka displayed a vastly improved batting performance, led by opener Pathum Nissanka. Despite retiring hurt on 50 after an apparent hip injury, Nissanka returned later to add 16 more runs to his tally, finishing with an explosive 66 off 42 balls. His innings included six boundaries and five sixes, setting the tone for a strong start.

Contributions from Kusal Mendis (54 off 48) and Janith Liyanage (53 off 52) further bolstered Sri Lanka’s innings. Their efforts ensured a challenging total for New Zealand, despite the hosts’ Matt Henry continuing his fine series with 4-55. Henry also reached a personal milestone of 150 ODI wickets during the game, while captain Mitchell Santner chipped in with 2-55.

Having suffered heavy defeats in the first two matches, Sri Lanka’s emphatic performance in the final game salvaged a lone victory in the three-match series. The win highlighted the team’s potential, with Malinga’s heroics providing a glimpse of their future prospects in the fast-bowling department.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers ensured the match ended in style, securing a morale-boosting triumph as they head towards their next cricketing challenge.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India debut not certain as team balance takes precedence

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-anticipated India debut is not guaranteed, with team management prioritising balance and existing performers ahead of the Ireland T20Is.

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has generated immense excitement ahead of India’s T20I series against Ireland, but a place in the playing XI is far from certain as team management weighs the importance of maintaining a settled combination.

The 15-year-old left-handed batter, who enjoyed a remarkable rise through domestic and franchise cricket, has been included in India’s T20I squad for the Ireland and England tours. However, fitting him into the starting XI presents a significant selection challenge.

Crowded top order creates selection headache

India already have several established opening options in the squad, including Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. Bringing Sooryavanshi into the side would likely require dropping one of the current top-order batters, many of whom have already delivered strong performances for the national team.

Ahead of the Ireland series, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak stressed that players who have been consistently performing should not be sidelined unfairly merely to accommodate new entrants. He added that competition for places is healthy and every player should wait for the appropriate opportunity.

The approach reflects head coach Gautam Gambhir’s emphasis on prioritising the team’s overall balance rather than making changes solely because of public demand or hype surrounding a player.

Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise continues

Despite uncertainty over his immediate debut, Sooryavanshi remains one of India’s brightest young prospects. The Bihar batter has impressed across age-group cricket, domestic competitions and the IPL, where his fearless strokeplay attracted widespread attention.

With India set to play a packed white-ball schedule, opportunities are expected to come for the youngster, even if he does not feature in the opening T20I against Ireland.

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai added another milestone to his growing international career by becoming one of the fastest batters to reach 50 sixes in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the third ODI against India national cricket team. Omarzai achieved the feat with two maximums in the match, entering an elite list of power-hitters in ODI cricket.

Omarzai and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi stitched together a 105-run partnership to rebuild the innings after Afghanistan faced early setbacks. Omarzai’s innings came to an end after he played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s recovery.

Omarzai among fastest batters to 50 ODI sixes

With this achievement, Omarzai reached the 50-sixes mark in just 36 ODI innings. According to the record list, only Corey Anderson and Liam Livingstone got there faster, taking 32 and 34 innings respectively. Omarzai is now the joint third-fastest batter to reach 50 ODI sixes, sharing the position with Muhammad Waseem after both achieved the milestone in 36 innings.

Fastest to 50 ODI sixes (by innings):

  • Corey Anderson – 32 innings
  • Liam Livingstone – 34 innings
  • Azmatullah Omarzai – 36 innings
  • Muhammad Waseem – 36 innings
  • Shimron Hetmyer – 38 innings
  • Harry Brook – 38 innings

Notably, no Indian batter features among the top five fastest players to reach 50 ODI sixes.

Equals Shahidi’s record against India

Omarzai’s half-century also helped him match captain Hashmatullah Shahidi’s record for the most ODI fifties by an Afghanistan batter against India. Both players now have two ODI half-centuries against the Indian team.

The latest achievement further highlights Omarzai’s importance to Afghanistan’s ODI setup, where he has established himself as one of the team’s most impactful all-rounders in recent years.

Prince Yadav makes India debut against Afghanistan after comeback from BCCI ban

Prince Yadav’s cricket journey came full circle as the Delhi fast bowler made his India debut against Afghanistan in Lucknow, years after serving a two-year BCCI suspension and rebuilding his career through domestic cricket and the IPL.

Fast bowler Prince Yadav achieved a major milestone in his cricket career after making his international debut for India in the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow on Wednesday. The Delhi pacer was handed his maiden India cap as the hosts made changes to their playing XI for the match.

Yadav’s selection marked the latest chapter in a journey that has included both setbacks and redemption. He came into the side after India reshuffled their lineup, with Nitish Kumar Reddy unavailable due to injury.

Long road to international cricket

The 24-year-old fast bowler rose through the ranks after establishing himself in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. Playing for the Lucknow Super Giants, Yadav emerged as one of the team’s notable performers during the 2026 IPL season, picking up 16 wickets in 14 matches.

He also grabbed headlines earlier this year when he dismissed Virat Kohli during an IPL match, a moment that significantly boosted his profile among cricket fans.

BCCI suspension and comeback

Yadav’s path to the national team was far from straightforward. In 2019, the BCCI imposed a two-year suspension on the pacer after he was found guilty of age-fudging in Under-19 cricket. According to reports, a discrepancy was found between documents submitted to the cricket board and records maintained by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The suspension kept him out of domestic cricket for two seasons. During that period, Yadav reportedly focused on improving his fitness and preparing for a return to competitive cricket.

His performances after returning helped him rebuild his career, eventually earning opportunities in domestic cricket, the IPL and now the Indian national team.

The debut against Afghanistan represents a significant turnaround for the Delhi fast bowler, who has gone from serving a suspension to representing India on the international stage.
