ICC Men’s T20I team of the year 2021: No Indian player included, Babar Azam named captain, Shaheen Afridi to lead pace attack

The Indian Cricket Council on Wednesday announced the ICC Men’s T20I team of the year 2021 with none of the Indian players making it to the esteemed list. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has been picked as the leader of the team.

For their stellar performances throughout the year including T20 World Cup, Jos Buttler and Mohammad Rizwan were selected as the openers for the side. Butler scored a century in the T20 World Cup while Rizwan broke several records on his way to stardom.

Rizwan had ruled the year 2021 scoring 1,326 runs in only 29 matches with an average of 73.66. He had also taken some tough catches behind the stump in T20 World Cup where he ended up as the third-highest run-scorer.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam who scored 939 runs in 29 matches in 2021, was named as the No. 3 batter and the skipper of the squad. He was at his classy best in the shortest format in 2021, leaving his best at the T20 World Cup where he ended the tournament as the leading run-scorer. His captaincy was also praised as he led his team to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman.

Despite no Indian players in the 11-member squad, 2 Australian players – Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood and 3 Pakistani players – Babar, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, have been included in the squad.

Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh completed the middle-order lineup. Markram scored 570 runs in 18 games at a strike rate of 148.82. Marsh was exceptional in his return to the national side. He moved up his order and scored 627 runs in 21 matches at an average of 36.88. He also contributed eight wickets to his team.

The 21-year-old Pakistan Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been picked to lead the team’s pace attack. With the ability of diverse swing and early breakthrough with the new ball, he picked up 23 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 26.04 and an economy of 7.86.

In the spin department, Waynindu Hasaranga, who also took a hat-trick against South Africa in T20 World, has been included in the team.
