As India trail 1-2 in the ongoing Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy series against England, team selection for the upcoming fourth Test faces new uncertainties with injuries unsettling the pace unit. Akash Deep, the bowling hero of India’s victory in Birmingham with 10 wickets, remains doubtful due to a groin injury sustained during the Lord’s Test.
During the team’s first outdoor practice session, Akash Deep attempted light drills but was eventually sidelined after failing a bowling fitness assessment conducted by coach Morne Morkel and the support staff. With Arshdeep Singh already ruled out due to a hand injury, India now have to choose between Prasidh Krishna and the recently added Anshul Kamboj to fill the third seamer’s spot.
Kamboj, a Haryana pacer who initially joined as cover for Arshdeep, was officially inducted into the main squad on Monday. The youngster impressed in the nets with a long, high-intensity spell alongside senior bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur. Interestingly, Kamboj also took part in a brief batting stint with Shardul, possibly hinting at his all-round potential and suggesting he could step in for the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Meanwhile, Siraj appeared in top form during his practice, bowling with the most aggression against Shubman Gill, K L Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. Bumrah, too, shifted from the nets to the outfield after finding the practice strip less than ideal.
A significant positive for India came in the form of Rishabh Pant. The wicketkeeper-batter, who had missed keeping duties at Lord’s due to a finger issue, batted freely and performed keeping drills pain-free for nearly an hour. His banter with teammates, especially skipper Shubman Gill during the session, indicated a positive mental space and probable return behind the stumps.
Middle-order considerations also loom. Karun Nair, whose position in the playing XI is under scrutiny, showed resolve with the bat. At the same time, Sai Sudharsan appeared to be in contention for Nair’s spot, taking slip catches and batting with focus.
With Nitish Kumar Reddy returning home due to injury and Yashasvi Jaiswal resuming slip-catching drills, India continue to reshuffle their squad. The fourth Test promises not only high stakes in the series but also a trial by fire for some potential debutants.
