With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bidding adieu to Test cricket, India’s lineup for the first Test against England at Leeds is under intense scrutiny. The spotlight now turns to head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has been handed the task of building a competitive XI amidst this transitional phase.
Robin Uthappa’s preferred playing XI sparks debate
Former India opener and T20 World Cup winner Robin Uthappa has weighed in on the ongoing selection debate, proposing a bold and unconventional batting order. Uthappa, sharing his views during a sports broadcast, supported KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opening pair. He cited Rahul’s prolific recent form, including a century and a fifty-plus score in the unofficial Tests against England Lions, as evidence of his readiness.
Notably, Uthappa advocated for the inclusion of left-hander Sai Sudharsan at No. 3, praising the youngster’s technical soundness and long-term potential in red-ball cricket. Shubman Gill was pushed down to No. 4, with Karun Nair suggested for the No. 5 slot due to his experience.
Pant, Jadeja, and Nitish Reddy included for depth and balance
Rishabh Pant was slotted at No. 6 by Uthappa, a position he termed as ideal for the wicketkeeper-batter. At No. 7, he proposed Nitish Kumar Reddy to enhance the team’s pace bowling depth, describing him as a “proper fast-bowling all-rounder.” Ravindra Jadeja was picked as the lone spinner, contributing with both bat and ball in English conditions.
Interestingly, Uthappa did not include Kuldeep Yadav in his XI, a decision that has sparked discussions among cricket followers. He instead opted for Jadeja to fill the spin department, highlighting the latter’s proven ability with the bat and ball, particularly in overseas conditions.
Bumrah, Siraj, and Krishna complete the pace attack
In the pace bowling section, Jasprit Bumrah leads the pack, followed by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. With the inclusion of Nitish Reddy, Uthappa’s XI boasts four pace options, providing flexibility depending on the pitch and weather in Leeds.
As the June 20 start date of the series nears, speculation around the final India XI continues, and Gambhir’s first major selection test as coach promises to be closely watched.
