Lalit Modi quits Nagpur Cricket Association

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Believed to be the brain behind the IPL, left India in 2010 amid serious allegations

The Indian Premier League (IPL) founder and former chief Lalit Modi has resigned as the president of  Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) on Saturday.Logging onto Twitter, he wrote, “Dear Fans of cricket & the lifeline of the game. I want to take this opportunity 2 thank each & everyone of you for making @IPL what it is??”

Modi, 53,  handed over his three-page resignation to BCCI Chief  Executive Officer Rahul Johri saying that he has done his part of improving Rajasthan cricket, and now it is BCCI’s turn to honour their part of the promise and release the funds due to Rajasthan Cricket Association as soon as possible.“Goodbye to cricket administration for now and requested the BCCI to pay back the Rajasthan Cricket Association its rightful share  of funds held back for long,” the letter reads.

Modi also cited the reason  for the blockage of funds in the letter and said, “…RCA from BCCI was blocked, ostensibly because of my presence in the system.”

“…With my exit from all forms of cricket, at all levels, forever, I think RCA deserves to reclaim their share and presence on the Indian cricket map. I hope the BCCI under your stewardship lives up to that promise,” the letter reads.

The BCCI has withheld RCA’s subvention money ever since the association elected Lalit Modi as president in 2013, at a time when he was facing a ban, for alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure as IPL chairman and commissioner. The Board said that since he was banned at the time, he could not hold any administrative post in India.

Notably, Rajasthan has not hosted a single Indian Premier League (IPL) or an international match in the last three years.

Modi left India in 2010  and settled in London after the BCCI suspended him over  22 charges, which includes –  bypassing the governing council while taking decisions, not following proper processes, bid rigging, awarding contracts to his friends, selling franchises to members of his family, betting and money laundering. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that he has manipulated the process of assigning broadcast rights of the IPL in 2009, reportedly in exchange for a kickback of over 125 crores.

Also, Lalit Modi’s 22-year-old son Ruchir had lost the high-stake in the  Rajasthan Cricket Association election in June this year to Congress man CP Joshi.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
