Among the current Indian cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have the most driven, at least on social media. And Friday it was all out in the open. When Hardik Pandya was named captain of the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League, some Rohit fans were devastated, enraged, and disappointed.
The biggest IPL upset ever pulled off by MI, who traded Hardik back to the Gujarat Titans one day after the retention window ended, was clearly in the writing.
Four days prior to the auction, on Friday, MI made the announcement about their new leadership. Additionally, social media was a flurry of activity as soon as the news broke.
Some Rohit fans did not liked MI’s decision with the appropriate humility. Videos of burned MI caps and jerseys went viral.
A fan shared the video on social media, in which it can be seen that he is burning MI jersey. He captioned the video as you deserve it. As soon he uploaded the video it quickly went viral. Others also expressed their disappointment with this decision as netizen stared tweeting shame on MI.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians congratulated Rohit for his outstanding contribution to the team and said in a statement that the leadership transition was a planned part of their future.
With five titles each, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL teams.
Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance for the Mumbai Indians, commented on Hardik’s selection, saying, it is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready.
He also said, the Mumbai Indians have always had outstanding leadership, from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who have all worked to build the squad for the future while also contributing to the club’s immediate success.
It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season, he added.
Since 2013, when India won their first of five IPL championships, Rohit has been the team captain. Most recently, he guided India to the ODI World Cup final.
Under Rohit’s leadership, there were additional titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. In the IPL 2023, the Mumbai Indians advanced to the playoffs.
