After Rajasthan Royals (RR) faced their tenth defeat of the IPL 2025 season, head coach Rahul Dravid did not hold back in expressing his frustration. Following the team’s 8-wicket loss to Punjab Kings, Dravid highlighted consistent underperformance in both batting and bowling departments, making it clear that changes are necessary.
“This was not a 220 pitch, it was about 195-200. We gave away 20 runs extra,” Dravid stated, underlining how repeated overestimations of pitch conditions and poor bowling in the death overs have led to insurmountable totals.
RR currently stand ninth on the points table, far from the form that was expected at the start of the season.
Death bowling and inconsistency under the scanner
One of the most concerning aspects has been RR’s ineffective death bowling. Matches against Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals saw them concede over 70 runs in the final five overs. Dravid pointed out that while the strategic plans are in place, execution continues to fall short.
“We have probably not been good enough with the ball. Both at taking wickets and controlling runs,” he said. “We are chasing 200-220 every game.”
Brittle middle-order and missed opportunities
Despite moments of promise, RR’s inability to convert winning positions into victories has been a theme throughout the season. Dravid particularly pointed to the team’s failure in the lower-middle order.
“We’ve got close, but we haven’t been able to finish the job,” he explained. “It’s not that we’ve been losing too many wickets… but we just haven’t been able to hit those shots.”
Criticism from legends and internal reflection
The team’s performance has drawn external criticism as well. Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar questioned RR’s strategy, calling their play “unthinking cricket” and expressing surprise at the team’s lack of clarity under a tactician like Dravid.
Suryavanshi a rare positive in a tough campaign
One of the few bright spots has been the emergence of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who stunned fans with a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans. However, his performances have also reflected the volatility of young talent, including a two-ball duck against Mumbai Indians.
Dravid urged for patience: “It’s been five games now where the margins have really been one or two hits which you need in that phase, which we just haven’t been able to do.”
RR’s final challenge: Avoiding the bottom finish
With just one match remaining, against Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals will look to avoid finishing last. As the season winds down, Dravid’s focus remains on extracting the positives and preparing for future rebuilding.
This turbulent season has highlighted the urgent need for RR to improve execution, rethink strategies, and support promising talents through their development.
