Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif expressed disappointment with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for overlooking Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming Test series against England, starting 20 June 2025.
Kaif highlighted Iyer’s consistent performances across formats, including domestic cricket, the Champions Trophy, and the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he has captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) with distinction, amassing 514 runs so far.
Kaif contrasted Iyer’s exclusion with the selection of Sai Sudharsan, whose white-ball form was factored into his Test call-up, pointing to an inconsistency in selection criteria.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif said, “Sai Sudharsan is an exceptional talent, no question. His 679 runs in IPL 2025 earned him a Test spot. But Shreyas Iyer has been performing consistently for years—around 550 runs in the 2023 ODI World Cup, strong showings in the Champions Trophy, and now 514 runs for PBKS while leading the team. You’re using white-ball form to select one player but ignoring it for another, which is unfair.”
On Monday, 26 May 2025, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer credited head coach Ricky Ponting for granting him the “freedom to express myself” after PBKS secured a spot in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025 with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.
Iyer, who joined PBKS after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024, has steered Punjab to their first playoff appearance since 2014, showcasing both leadership and batting prowess.
At the post-match presentation, Iyer said, “Ricky and I have built a strong bond over the years. He gives me the liberty to make decisions on the field, which has worked wonderfully for us.”
He praised the team’s collective effort, stating, “From the first game, we’ve been determined to win, no matter the odds. Players have stepped up in tough moments, and the support staff and management deserve immense credit.”
Iyer also highlighted Ponting’s role in fostering team unity, adding, “Ricky’s player management has been outstanding. Early wins built trust, and maintaining good relationships has kept our dressing room atmosphere top-notch.”
Iyer’s leadership and form have been pivotal for PBKS, making his exclusion from the Test squad a point of contention, as voiced by Kaif, amid discussions on balancing red-ball and white-ball credentials in Indian cricket selections.
