Suryakumar Yadav appears before ICC over Pahalgam remark, faces warning or fine

Indian cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav has appeared before the International Cricket Council (ICC) to explain his post-match remarks following India’s Asia Cup 2025 group stage victory against Pakistan. The comments, in which he dedicated the win to the armed forces and the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, triggered an official complaint and led to a disciplinary hearing.

The ICC Hearing

The hearing, presided over by former West Indies captain and ICC match referee Richie Richardson, was attended by Suryakumar along with BCCI COO Hemang Amin and Cricket Operations Manager Summer Mallapurkar. According to sources, Richardson conveyed that players should refrain from making statements that could be construed as political.

A source familiar with the matter told PTI, “Surya attended the ICC hearing today. Richardson explained to him that he shouldn’t be making any comments that could be seen as political in nature. Since it falls under Level 1, the sanction could either be a warning or a fine of up to 15 per cent of his match fees.”

The Pahalgam Context

The controversy stems from Suryakumar’s comments after India’s win against Pakistan on September 14, when he said at the post-match presentation:
“Perfect occasion… we stand by the families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We dedicate the win to our armed forces who showed bravery. Hope they continue to inspire us, and we give them more reasons to smile.”

The Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 people dead, further strained India-Pakistan relations. Adding to the tension, Suryakumar did not shake hands with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha after either of the two matches between the sides.

Other Complaints Under Review

The ICC is also reviewing a separate complaint filed by the BCCI against Pakistan players Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan. While Farhan celebrated his half-century in the Super 4 clash with a provocative ‘gun’ gesture, Rauf allegedly made the controversial “6-0” hand sign, referencing India’s past record against Pakistan in World Cups.

What’s Next?

Since the matter falls under a Level 1 offence, the ICC is unlikely to impose a ban. Suryakumar could face either an official reprimand or a partial match fee deduction. A final decision is expected within the week.
