India announce 15-member squad for T20 World Cup: R Ashwin back in T20I after 4 years, but why was Yuzvendra Chahal denied a chance?

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has not played in a T20 international match since 2017, has also made a comeback in white-ball cricket after 4 years. In team India’s 15 member squad, five spinners have been picked but not Yuzvendra Chahal.

T20 World Cup

The BCCI on Wednesday announced the 15-member Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 scheduled to begin from October 17 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Former captain M.S. Dhoni has been named the mentor for the team during the course of the tournament. Dhoni-led India had won the trophy in its inaugural tournament in 2007.

The selectors have dropped spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and batter Shikhar Dhawan, instead Rahul Chahar has been preferred over the experienced Chahal.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has not played in a T20 international match since 2017, has also made a comeback in T20s after four years. In Team India’s 15 member squad, five spinners have been picked but not Yuzvendra Chahal.

The exclusion of Chahal comes when the T20 World Cup will be played in the UAE, where the pitch is spin-friendly. In his last outing, Chahal had played only one match in a 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Chief Selector Chetan Sharma said that the selectors wanted a spinner who can deliver with more speed and chose Rahul Chahar since he could do that.

Sharma said the team management went with Rahul Chahar after having a lot of discussions on Chahal.

Twentythree-year-old Ishan Kishan and 30-year-old Surya Kumar Yadav have been rewarded for their consistent performance in the IPL for Mumbai Indians and Team India in away tours.

The ICC T20 men’s World Cup is set to commence in the UAE from October 17 and Ashwin is the only off-spinner in the 15 members squad. The selectors have picked him on the basis of his previous performances in UAE and spin-friendly pitches.

Calling him an asset, Chetan Sharma said Ashwin has performed well in the IPL. The wickets are likely to be slow in the UAE and that will help the spinners, the chief selector said.

Ashwin found a place for himself in the 15-member squad in place of the injured Washington Sundar, who had also performed well in the IPL, Sharma said.
