Three years after it began, the World Test Championship has reached its final day the reserve day with all options open draw or a win for either side though the New Zealand have a greater chance.
After losing openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma on Day 5 at 64 for 2, Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara will resume India’s innings on Day 6. India have eight second-innings wickets in hand and are 32 runs ahead.
The wicket of Rohit Sharma, who had helped India erase the 32-run first innings deficit after Mohammed Shami’s four dismissals had restricted New Zealand to 249, was a big blow.
The WTC final between India and New Zealand extended into the sixth day after two full days – Day 1 and Day 4 – were washed out due to rain and other days were affected by rain and bad light in Southampton.
The match will begin on Day 6 (reserve day) of the WTC final at 3:00 pm at and a total of 98 overs are available in the day.
Talking on the reserve day during press briefing, the ICC said the umpires will signal the start of the last hour of play on the reserve day. The maximum duration for the Reserve Day is a minimum of 330 minutes (or 83 overs, whichever is later), plus the last hour.
The media release said if the match ends in a draw, or a tie, after the total designated time on the reserve day then the teams will be declared joint winners of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2021.
The ICC also said if play is suspended for any reason other than normal intervals prior to the start of the final hour, then playing time shall be extended by the total time lost, up to the amount of extra time available.
It will be interesting to see the approach from India on the final day in Southampton. There was a fair amount of sunshine on Tuesday and the ball wasn’t doing as much as the first two days of action in the WTC final.

The Kiwi pacer Tim Southee who have contributed with the bat, hitting two sixes in his 44-ball 30 to help New Zealand to reach a total of 249 after 135 for 5, could be dangerous for Indian batsman on Day 6.
