The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president JP Nadda on Tuesday released the manifesto, or Sankalp Patra, for the upcoming Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023 in Kohima. State BJP president Temjen Imna and several other prominent leaders were also present at that time.

In Nagaland, the BJP is in the ruling alliance with Neiphiu Rio’s Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and will contest in 20 out of 60 seats.

He said BJP will ensure 100 percent coverage for the Direct Benefit Transfer of all the government schemes in Nagaland. BJP will also introduce Nagaland Tourism Skill Mission to train 50,000 youth in the arena of tourism.

The BJP is planning to establish a dedicated Nagaland Cultural Research Fund worth Rs 1,000 crore. This will help in imparting knowledge, promoting historic Naga culture and language, and fostering the development of agriculture, among other things, he said.

While presenting the manifesto, Nadda also said that 2 free gas cylinders per annum will be given to Ujjawala beneficiaries. He said that BJP will also launch CM Free Scooty Scheme for college-going meritorious female students if they come into power.

He added that the saffron party will also establish a dedicated department for mother and child care in all district hospitals.

Nadda assured that they will double the insurance cap for families under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. The present annual Rs 5 lakh limit under the scheme will be enhanced to Rs 10 lakh annually.

Nadda further said that the BJP has set up a Software Technological Park in Kohima, which will help with infrastructural development and connectivity to bring about overall development in the area.

Gaza ceasefire begins after Hamas shares 1st list of hostages to be freed

The Israeli government, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, insisted on receiving the complete list of 33 hostages before committing to the ceasefire, emphasizing its unwavering resolve to secure the release of all its citizens.

A fragile ceasefire has descended upon the war-torn Gaza Strip, marking a tentative pause in the protracted conflict between Israel and Hamas. The truce, brokered by Qatar and effective as of 9:15 GMT (11:15 local time) on January 19, represents a significant, albeit temporary, de-escalation in a conflict that has claimed the lives of thousands and left a trail of devastation in its wake. The agreement’s precarious nature is underscored by the fact that its implementation directly depends on the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

The initial phase of the ceasefire, designed to last for 42 days, is contingent upon Hamas fulfilling its commitment to release a first tranche of 33 Israeli hostages from the approximately 98 still held captive.

To initiate this crucial first step, Hamas publicly released the names of three female hostages: Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher. This symbolic gesture served as a crucial catalyst, paving the way for the cessation of hostilities. However, the delay in the ceasefire’s implementation, initially scheduled for 8:30 AM local time, highlighted the deep-seated mistrust and the complexities inherent in negotiating a lasting peace.

The Israeli government, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, insisted on receiving the complete list of 33 hostages before committing to the ceasefire, emphasizing its unwavering resolve to secure the release of all its citizens.

The exchange of hostages is not a one-sided affair. In return for the release of the Israeli captives, Israel has pledged to release approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners currently incarcerated in Israeli prisons. This reciprocal element underscores the delicate balance involved in brokering a ceasefire and the intricate negotiations required to achieve a mutually acceptable agreement.

The release of these Palestinian prisoners represents a substantial concession on Israel’s part, reflecting the high stakes and the complex political calculations involved in ending the prolonged hostilities.

The ceasefire’s fragility is underscored by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding its longevity and the prospects for a more sustainable peace. The 42-day timeframe represents only the first phase, with discussions planned for a second phase to commence in two weeks.

This limited timeframe highlights the tentative nature of the agreement and leaves open the possibility of renewed conflict should the negotiations for a second phase falter. The limited scope of the truce emphasizes the deep-seated challenges and the long road ahead toward achieving a durable peace in the region.

Even with the ceasefire in effect, the shadow of violence continues to loom large. Despite the official commencement of the truce, reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes persisted until the complete list of hostages was provided, illustrating the tension and the unresolved issues that continue to threaten the fragile agreement. This underscores the deep-seated mistrust between the two sides and the difficulty in transitioning from a state of active conflict to a period of sustained peace.

The conflict, which began with the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of hundreds, has unleashed a cascade of violence that has left an indelible mark on the region. The subsequent Israeli offensive has resulted in the deaths of more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials.

These staggering casualty figures serve as a stark reminder of the devastating human cost of this protracted conflict and the urgent need for a lasting solution. The path to peace remains arduous and fraught with obstacles, but the current ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope, albeit a fragile one, amidst the ruins of war.

RJD hits out at Nitish Kumar over his women’s dress remark

Yadav has been positioning himself to attract women voters ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, proposing a monthly stipend should his party gain power.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sparked controversy during a state event on Saturday by asserting that women’s fashion in Bihar has notably improved since he took office two decades ago. This statement elicited a strong backlash from RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who criticised Kumar, stating that he was not a “fashion designer” and that the comments revealed a “warped mentality.”

In a video shared by Yadav on X, Kumar can be heard commenting, “Girls have become so confident. They speak so well and dress up so well. Did we see them wearing such fine clothes earlier?” The remarks were made while he was in Begusarai district as part of his statewide ‘Pragati Yatra.’

In response, Yadav contended that the women of Bihar have always dressed with self-respect and self-reliance, emphasizing, “Don’t try to be a fashion designer for women. Your thinking is warped and your statement is a direct insult to half of the population.”

Yadav has been positioning himself to attract women voters ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, proposing a monthly stipend should his party gain power.

During Kumar’s remarks, both Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary of the BJP and JD(U) Cabinet Minister Vijay Chaudhary appeared uneasy and urged him to change the subject.

Kumar’s comments are not unprecedented; he faced criticism in 2023 for remarks made about women’s education and its link to population control, which led to an apology the following day amid demands for his resignation from the opposition.

Additionally, during the last Lok Sabha election campaign, Kumar had criticized RJD chief Lalu Prasad, claiming he had failed to accomplish anything substantial during his tenure, suggesting that he “only produced children.”

On Sunday, the Mumbai Police stated that the individual arrested for the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is suspected to be a Bangladeshi national, a conclusion drawn from evidence found among his possessions. In a media briefing, police confirmed that the attacker had taken on the name Vijay Das upon entering India.

DCP Zone 9, Dixit Gedam, identified the suspect as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a 30-year-old man who allegedly entered Saif Ali Khan’s residence with the intent to rob. Gedam indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the accused is of Bangladeshi descent, having entered India illegally and subsequently changed his name.

Reports indicate that he arrived in Mumbai approximately 5 to 6 months ago, initially residing in the city before moving to its outskirts. The suspect was employed by a housekeeping agency, according to police sources.

“On January 16, at around 2 am, an attack occurred at Saif Ali Khan’s residence. An FIR was filed, and the suspect was arrested soon after. His identity as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, aged 30, has been confirmed. He broke into the home with robbery in mind. He will be presented in court, where a request for custody will be made, and further investigations will follow,” Gedam stated while raising concerns regarding the suspect’s Bangladeshi background.

He pointed out credible evidence for these suspicions, such as the lack of valid Indian documentation and items seized that suggest his nationality.

Previous reports indicated that the suspect had been using multiple aliases, including Vijay Das and Bijoy Das. The main suspect was intercepted in the early hours of Sunday in Thane West, Maharashtra.

Actor Saif Ali Khan was reportedly assaulted multiple times in his upscale apartment located in Mumbai’s Bandra area during a burglary attempt in the early hours of Thursday.

The actor resides on the 12th floor of the ‘Satguru Sharan’ building. At the time of the incident, Saif Ali Khan was at home with his wife, fellow actor Kareena Kapoor, and their two children, four-year-old Jeh and eight-year-old Taimur.
