Compressed natural gas (CNG) and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) rate has been increased in Mumbai as of August 2, 2022, at midnight. This is the seventh time that the prices of PNG and CNG has gone up in this state. Mahanagar Gas (MGL), a distributor of city gas in Mumbai, has announced a price increase of Rs. 6 per kilogram for compressed natural gas (CNG) and Rs. 4 per unit for piped natural gas.

According to a statement from Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), in Mumbai, the domestic PNG will be now sold at Rs. 52.50 per Standard Cubic Metre (SCM) and CNG will be sold for Rs. 86 per Kg. The last price hike took place on July 12, 2022. MGL has chosen to recoup such increased gas expenses because the rise in input costs is very high. Therefore, MGL is forced to raise the MRP of domestic PNG by 4/SCM and CNG by Rs 6 per Kg in Mumbai as of midnight on August 2, 2022.

Since April 1, the Center has hiked the price of domestic and imported natural gas by more than 110 per cent. This entirely negated the state’s announcement of a hefty price cut by reducing the VAT on these fuels from 13.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent as of April 1.

Despite the energy sector’s liberalisation, the government still has a significant extent of control over natural gas supply and pricing. The prices and supply allocation are established in advance twice a year. The price hike of April 1 is effective until the end of September, and the next modification will be published on October 1.

The gas sector in India is facing a significant challenge as a result of the recent surge in natural gas prices worldwide caused by increased demand from Europe and reduced supplies from Russia.

Ahmedabad CNG price hike

Moreover, in Ahmedabad also the price of CNG has been increased. The price of one kg of CNG gas has been increased by Rs 1.99, due to which the price of CNG of Adani Gas has now increased to Rs 85.89 per kg in Ahmedabad city. Earlier on July 3, the price of CNG was increased by Rs 1.31. Then the price increased from Rs 82.59 to Rs 83.90. Auto rickshaw drivers have strongly opposed this price hike due to the increase in the price of CNG.
