1988 Road rage case: Navjot Singh Sidhu to be released today on account of his good behaviour

Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released today from the Patiala jail after serving sentence in a 1988 road rage incident. The cricketer-turned-politician is set to walk free after spending about 10 months in the Patiala Central Jail.

The 59-year-old politician, who was handed a one-year imprisonment in the road rage case and was due to be released in May, is getting an early release on account of his good behaviour under the state’s general remission policy.

Sidhu’s lawyer HPS Verma said the politician’s scheduled release was in May, but for all prisoners with good conduct, all Sunday holidays get deducted from the sentence period. Therefore, (Navjot) Sidhu is getting a 48-day remission, he added.

On Friday, Sidhu’s team put a tweet from his account that he was informed by the concerned authorities that he will be released today. He further said that he will address the media outside jail around noon.

Navjot Singh Sidhu was granted a one-year-imprisonment last year in May by the Supreme Court following a petition filed by the family of a man who died after a brawl with Sidhu and his friend in 1988.

The victim’s family demanded a harsher punishment for Sidhu and asked to review the 2018 order from the Supreme Court acquitting him of murder. In 2018, the apex court ordered Sidhu to pay Rs 1,000 as a fine for voluntarily hurting a person. However, the court, reviewing its order, said it considered it appropriate to jail Sidhu, saying some aggravated culpability must be attached if a person dies.

For the unversed, Sidhu got into an argument with 65-year-old Gurnam Singh, a resident of Patiala, over a parking spot on December 27, 1988. He and his friend, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, allegedly dragged Gurnam out of his car and hit him who later died in a hospital.

Election Commission removes West Bengal DGP, home secretaries of Gujarat, Bihar, UP and 3 other states

Days after announcing the Lok Sabha 2024 schedule, the Election Commission ordered to remove home secretaries in six states, namely Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, the Election Commission issued orders for the removal of six Home Secretaries and the top bureaucrats from Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

The top police official in a state where there have been multiple incidents of violence during elections in recent years, West Bengal’s Director-General of Police, was also transferred by the poll panel. The poll panel also mandated that by 5 p.m., a shortlist of three possible candidates for the position be prepared and submitted.

The transfer of the home secretaries of Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, as well as top officials affiliated with the offices of the chief ministers of Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh, is part of the reorganisation, which is a customary action by the Election Commission  ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

In addition, Iqbal Singh Chahal, the Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, as well as other officials from Maharashtra’s municipalities, have been dismissed.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election is less than a month away; the ECI announced on Saturday that voting will take place in seven phases starting on April 19 and ending on June 1.

Actually, since the ECI issued polling dates, this is the first bureaucratic reshuffle.

Following a meeting with his two associates, the recently appointed Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar took action. In the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, as well as the by-polls for 26 seats across 13 states, the poll panel is committed to providing fair and equal opportunities for all political parties. This action is part of that commitment.

According to sources, the dismissed officials were found to be holding multiple positions in the chief ministers’ offices of each state. This could compromise needed impartiality, especially with regard to law-and-order before, during, and after voting.

The Congress asserted that the state had unleashed thugs on the populace, while the Trinamool charged the opposition with inciting violence and chastised central authorities for their inability to safeguard voters.

He said the INDI alliance manifesto says that they will finish Shakti. The prime minister said that he accepted this challenge.

He talked about how the landing point of Chandrayaan 3 is also named Shiv-Shakti. He said the fight is between those who want to finish Shakti and those who worship Shakti. He said Muqabla 4 June ko ho jaega. Earlier on Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke at the closing ceremony of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Mumbai. Lalu Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya to contest from Saran Lok Sabha seat as RJD candidate

Rohini Acharya is likely to contest Lok Sabha elections and party leaders have said they want her as Saran candidate.

RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter RohiniAcharyais scheduled to run in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Saran Lok Sabha constituency, according to reports. Using social media, party leaders have also made hints about this development. For a very long time, candidates from the Saran seat have been Lalu family members.

Three of Lalu’s children are currently participating in politics on a serious level. These include Tej Pratap Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, his two sons who have both held ministerial positions in the past, and his elder daughter Misa Bharti.

It is important to note that Rohini was the one who generously gave her father one of her kidneys when he had kidney transplant surgery in a Singaporean hospital back in December of 2022.

Sources claim that RJD MLC Sunil Kumar Singh suggested Rohini’s name for the Saran seat during the party’s Sunday (March 17) meeting. All of the participants agreed with the suggestion.

Singh underscored at the discussion the party workers’ strong emotional attachment to the Saran seat and the Lalu family. As such, it was considered improper to take into account the name of any other contender. Further, Singh pointed out that if another local candidate, like former minister Jitendra Rai, were to be chosen, the party might not get support from other local RJD leaders in Saran. As a result, Rohini was thought to be the better choice.

Bihar’s Saran constituency, where Jay Prakash Narayan was born, is very important politically. It is thought to be among the state’s most popular legislative seats. Since starting his political career here in 1977, Lalu Yadav has been elected as the Member of Parliament four times from this constituency. Rabri Devi, his wife, has run for office from this seat as well.

In 2009, Lalu Yadav defeated Saran in the elections. However, he was barred from running for office after being found guilty of the fodder scam. As a result, Rabri Devi contested for this seat in 2014. All of RJD’s attempts against the Modi wave, however, were in vain as Rajiv Pratap Rudy emerged victorious and rejoined parliament.
