The teaser for Bad Girl, a Tamil coming-of-age drama produced by acclaimed filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vetri Maaran, has ignited a firestorm of debate online. Released on Sunday, the teaser showcases the journey of a young woman (Anjali Sivaraman) from high school to college, unflinchingly portraying her experiences with misogyny and slut-shaming after openly expressing her burgeoning sexuality. Her male classmates shame her, while female peers label her a “despo” (a derogatory term). The full weight of her misogynistic world crashes down when she enters a college relationship.

This raw depiction has elicited sharply divided reactions. Filmmaker Pa Ranjith lauded the film, praising the directors for their courageous portrayal of women’s struggles within a patriarchal society. He specifically highlighted the “unique new wave cinema style” employed to convey these challenging realities. His tweet, sharing the teaser, sparked a wave of support for the film’s bold approach.

However, a significant segment of the audience, particularly those critical of the protagonist’s Brahmin background, voiced strong disapproval. This dissent reached a fever pitch with a scathing response from director Mohan G (known for Draupathi and Rudra Thandavam). He retweeted Ranjith’s positive comment, launching a pointed attack on Vetri Maaran, Anurag Kashyap, and Ranjith himself, whom he grouped as a “clan.”

Mohan G accused the filmmakers of exploiting the Brahmin community for narrative purposes, deeming the portrayal of the protagonist’s personal life a tired trope and urging them to showcase similar narratives within their own caste. His critique ignited further debate regarding representation and the ethical considerations in cinematic storytelling.

The cinematography is handled by Preetha Jayaraman, Jagadeesh Ravi, and Prince Anderson, with editing by Radha Sridhar. The film’s world premiere will be at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam (January 30th – February 9th, 2025), where it’s selected for the Tiger Competition. The film’s selection underscores its potential to spark important conversations, despite the controversy surrounding its teaser.

Hollywood actors Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas have once again sparked romance rumors after being seen together in London. The duo was spotted arriving at the London Heliport on the evening of March 14, marking their second public outing in recent weeks.

According to reports, the two actors appeared relaxed and comfortable in casual attire, engaging in lively conversations and laughter with the heliport staff. Their recent joint appearances have intensified speculation about a possible romantic relationship.

Tom and Ana’s growing closeness

The romance rumors initially began circulating over Valentine’s Day weekend last month when Tom and Ana were first photographed together. The duo was seen walking through London’s Soho neighborhood, with Ana carrying takeout food. They also stopped to interact with fans and pose for photographs, further fueling dating speculations.

Neither Tom, who has been filming a movie in England directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, nor Ana have addressed these rumors. In a recent encounter with Spanish media in Madrid, Ana declined to comment when asked whether her outing with Tom was personal or work-related.

Past relationships and media interest

Ana de Armas has been linked to Tinder executive Paul Boukadakis in 2023 and previously dated actor Ben Affleck from 2020 to 2021. Tom Cruise, on the other hand, has maintained a relatively private personal life in recent years.

Tollywood’s latest courtroom drama, Court: State vs A Nobody, featuring Priyadarshi, has garnered enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics alike. Marking the directorial debut of Ram Jagadeesh, the film includes a talented cast with Harsh Roshan and Sridevi Apalla in prominent roles.

The movie is achieving remarkable success at the box office, having grossed an impressive Rs. 15.90 crore by the end of its second day, inclusive of earnings from early screenings. This milestone is particularly notable for a film with a modest budget that has successfully resonated with viewers.

Court is expected to maintain its momentum, with the weekend figures promising further growth. Presented by Nani, the film also stars notable actors like Sivaji, Sai Kumar, and Surabhi. Produced by Prashanti Tipirneni, the film’s score is composed by Vijay Bulganin.

The film’s journey at the box office has been astounding considering its initial projections. According to Sacnilk, Court’s earnings reached Rs. 14.9 crore by the end of day two, showcasing its strength in the market.

With total earnings nearing Rs. 20 crore over the weekend, Court is well-positioned to surpass its break-even point, making it a success for the producers and distributors.

Produced with an overall budget of Rs. 10 crore, including promotional efforts, Court has recouped its investment through pre-release business. Released in around 650 screens globally, it may be classified as a smaller release, but its audience attraction highlights an appetite for content-driven cinema alongside larger blockbusters.

In comparison to other 2025 Telugu openings, Court performed well within its category. While the big-budget films achieved higher numbers, Court has significantly outperformed expectations within its niche.

To deem Court a hit, it needs to gross Rs. 20 crore and attain a distributor share of Rs. 10 crore. Current trends suggest it is on a successful trajectory, proving that compelling storytelling and strong performances can lead to triumph at the box office, even on a reduced budget.
