Bengal Man cremates pet parrot

In a heartwarming tale, a man in West Bengal bid adieu to his pet parrot by cremating it and performing all the last rites of his beloved bird according to Hindu rituals, as one would a family member.

Tarak Majumdar, a resident of Aayra village in Habra area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district performed the last rites of his cherished pet parrot ‘Bhakto’ who had been living with the Majumdar family for the past 25 years.

Majumdar said that the family treated ‘Bhakto’ as one of their own and adored the pet bird like a chilld and used to take meals with the family like other family members.

According to reports, the dear bird died on Friday following a brief illness, plunging the Majumdar family into mourning  who then performed the deceased pet’s last rites as per Hindu traditions even as locals paid visits to their home for condolences and pay last respects to the adored parrot.

A teary-eyed Tarak Majumdar said that on Friday, Bhakto fell ill while the family was having a function. He said that the loud music coming from a DJ speaker, that was placed near the bird’s cage, may have damaged the bird’s brain and resulted in its death.

Majumdar said they noticed that the pet parrot suddenly fell unconscious and took it out of its cage and offerred it water. The beloved pet had sip of water, opened its eyes for a bit , and then died in the hands of its owner.

Tarak Majumdar said they decided to perform Bhakto’s last rites as per Hindu customs as they believe that the pet parrot will be born as  human being in their family in the future.

The Majumdar family’s unique bond with their cherished Bhakto is one of the most endearing tales of human-pet companionship that has come to the fore recently.
