Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru joined the freedom struggle against the Britishers and wanted to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai who succumbed to his injuries caused by a baton charge during a peaceful protest march against the all-British Simon Commission.
The three revolutionaries plotted to kill Superintendent of Police James Scott in Lahore. However, they got confused and shot the Assistant Superintendent of Police, John Saunders. A year later, Bhagat Singh along with Batukeshwar Dutt dropped bombs in the Central Assembly Hall in Delhi and chanted Inquilab Zindabad.
During the interrogation of the incident, his involvement in the death of John Saunders was found out. He didn’t offer any defence during the trial of the case and was slapped with a death sentence on October 7, 1930. He was hanged on 24 March 1931, but it was brought forward by 11 hours to 23 March 1931 at 7:30 p.m. He was only 23 when he was hanged.
