Women at a Durga Puja pandal in West Bengal’s Kolkata, participated in sindoor khela on Vijayadashami. Sindoor khela, a tradition that brings Bengali women together to celebrate the goddess Durga and power of femininity.

Bengali women living in different parts of the country celebrate the festival by participating in the sindoor khela on the final day of Durga Puja or Vijayadashami.

In the video, people can see how married women applying vermilion (sindoor) to each other while shaking their legs on the beat, adorning white saris with red bordering.

This year, sindoor khela was celebrated on October 24, which is also a final day of Durga Puja called Vijayadashami.

Bengali women wears traditional saris and adorned jewellery during sindoor khela, which starts with applying sindoor to the forehead and feet of goddess. They also apply sindoor to each other, expressing sisterhood that brings happiness and joy in life.

The Devi Boron ceremony is an important ritual in bidding farewell to the goddess. Worshippers trace a betel leaf on their palms and tenderly brush it against the deity’s face. This gesture symbolises wiping away any tears from Maa Durga’s eyes as she prepares to leave her parental home and reunite with her husband. After applying sindoor on her forehead and adorning her bangles, sweets are offered as a final tribute.

Sindoor khela is a deeply rooted tradition with a historical significance that dates back to the 18th century in West Bengal. It represents the strength, love, and unity among women and is performed during Durga Puja. During the ritual, married women apply red vermilion on their foreheads, which symbolises the blessing of a long and prosperous married life. Women also pray for the well-being of their families and seek the goddess’s blessings for the upcoming year’s Durga Puja.

The tradition is a symbol of inclusive, transcending caste, creed, and age. There is no discrimination when it comes to perform the rituals. Women from different community, come together to celebrate this festival.
