Nezha 2 becomes China’s highest-grossing film

Distributors often hesitate to launch major titles during economic downturns or outside of holiday periods, which could impact future earnings.

The Chinese animated film “Nezha 2” has achieved remarkable success, becoming the highest-grossing film in the country as of Thursday, with over 5.8 billion yuan in earnings. This surge can be largely attributed to its popularity during the recent Lunar New Year holiday.

The film tells the story of a mythical boy endowed with magical powers and extraordinary martial arts skills. It has surpassed the previous record holder, “The Battle at Lake Changjin,” a 2021 epic about the Korean War, according to data from the online ticketing platform Maoyan.

“Nezha 2” serves as a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster “Nezha,” which ranks fifth among China’s all-time highest-grossing films. Both movies draw inspiration from the classic 16th-century Chinese novel “Investiture of the Gods,” blending traditional folklore with modern animation techniques.

China’s film industry enjoyed a strong showing during the Lunar New Year holiday, setting historic records during the eight-day festival for total box office revenue and cinema attendance. This encouraging trend comes on the heels of a dismal 2024, during which the overall box office fell 22.6% compared to the previous year, as audiences opted to stay home amid economic uncertainty.

Although the beginning of 2025 appears promising for the film industry, analysts express caution regarding the future. A report from Goldman Sachs highlighted that box office performance is significantly influenced by the release schedules of blockbuster films. Distributors often hesitate to launch major titles during economic downturns or outside of holiday periods, which could impact future earnings.

“Nezha 2” has only been in theatres for nine days, and its total box office is expected to continue rising as more audiences discover the film. Interestingly, of the ten highest-grossing films in China’s history, only one is a Hollywood entry: “Avengers: Endgame,” which secured the ninth position with a box office of 4.25 billion yuan in 2019. This highlights the growing prominence of domestic films in China’s cinematic landscape.
