Kashmir theatre housefull after 32 years, courtesy Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan

Housefull displayed outside INOX theatre in Kashmir's Srinagar showing Pathaan

After almost 32 years, a theatre in Kashmir displayed the housefull board outside its gates, courtesy of ‘King Khan’ starrer Pathaan.

Kashmir, which plays an important role in plot of Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster return movie, has also brought joy and business to the valley’s only modern theatre owner INOX, who posted a picture of a “Housefull” sign displayed outside the premises after more than three decades.

According to BookMyShow, INOX: Srinagar Shivpora had six shows of Pathaan today between 2:30 PM and 6 PM and five of them displayed as either sold out, filling fast or almost full when we last check. Similar trend was observed for the shows for the rest of the weekend.

In another tweet, INOX revealed that all shows on the opening day of Pathaan’s release were sold out, with the caption Kashmir has shown “extraordinary love” to Pathaan aka Shah Rukh Khan.

With a special showing of Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chaddha, the administration threw open movie theatres in Union Territory in September 2022 after remaining shut for more than 30 years owing to terrorist attacks and threats of violence from hardline separatist groups.

Over a dozen cinemas operated and thrived in the Kashmir valley until the outbreak of militancy in the late 1980’s, when they were forced to shut down after threats from separatists and terror groups.

INOX runs Kashmir’s first multiplex containing three theatres in Shivpora area of Srinagar city, adjacent to the massive Badami Bagh Army Cantonment. A conscious decision, since terror attacks against movie theatres in the valley are a very real security concern.

The UT’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said in September last year that there was no message behind the opening of constructing and reopening movie theatres in the valley.

Meanwhile, Pathaan continued to do massive business on the third day of its release.

The Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer has collected around Rs 70 crore on the second day of its release in India. This is the highest single-day collection of a Hindi film ever. On January 26, the film crossed Rs 235 crore worldwide.
