US President Donald Trump’s supporters on Wednesday breached the Capitol building in Washington DC in an attempt to thwart the certification of Joe Biden as the new president.
The angry protesters created chaos that resulted in rioting and violence as the lawmakers began formally certifying Biden’s win in the election. Four people including a white woman who was part of the protests on the floor were shot dead after gunfire erupted momentarily.
As Vice President Mike Pence rebuffed Trump’s demand to overturn his loss to Democrat Joe Biden, protesters supporting Trump swarmed the US Capitol. The Senate’s Republican leader denounced a bid in Congress to undo the election outcome.
The dozens of Trump supporters violated the curfew ordered by Mayor Muriel Boweser, despite the presence of officers in full riot gear. Following a four hour confrontation with pro-Trump rioters, the Capitol building was successfully secured, and the process of dispersing protesters is in process, said the US officials.
Meanwhile, MIke has reconvened the US Congress to certify Biden’s electoral college win once the Capitol building was cleared of protesters. Biden won the election in the state-by-state Electoral College and in the national popular vote, but Trump continued to falsely claim there was widespread fraud and believed that he was the victor.
Biden has denounced the Capitol violence as an assault on the citadel of liberty, saying that Trump had taken the mob with his brazen and false claims that the election results have been stolen. He termed the chaotic scene as a dark moment in the nation’s history, and held Trump accountable for instigating violence, which led to left members of both parties and allies around the world appalled.
Several world leaders and governments across the globe expressed shock and condemned the storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters.
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi said he was distressed to hear the news and hoped for the peaceful transfer of power between Trump and Biden. The democratic process cannot be permitted to be subverted through unlawful protest, he tweeted.
Besides Modi, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson termed the incident as disgraceful scenes in US Congress. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas wrote that Trump and his supporters should finally accept the decision of the American voters and stop trampling on democracy.
French leader Emmanuel Macron said that they will not give in to the violence of a few who want to question democracy. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted that Canadians are deeply disturbed and saddened by the attack on democracy in the US .
Australian PM Scott Morrison condemned the acts of the violence and looked forward to a peaceful transfer of government in the great American democratic tradition.
