China admits five military officers

China on Friday has officially acknowledged that five of its military officers and soldiers were killed in the Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh with the Indian Army.

Those five soldiers stationed in the Karakoram mountains were recognised with the honorary titles and first-class merit citations by China’s Central Military Commission, reported the People’s Liberation Army, official newspaper of the Chinese military.

According to reports, Chen Hongjiun, Chen Xiangrong, Xiao Siyuan, Wang Zhuoran and Qi Fabao, the regimental commander from the PLA Xinjiang Military Command were among five soldiers who were killed in the Galwan valley clash last year.

This is the first time China has admitted about the casualties and details of these officers and soldiers’ sacrifice. The four of whom reportedly  died dealing with the Indian military’s illegal trespassing of the Galwan Valley Line of Actual Control (LAC).

While shortly after the clashes on June 15, India reported the loss of 20 soldiers. The casualties were honoured for their bravery with their names installed in memorials. At the time, Beijing had refused to disclose details of Chinese casualties.

Earlier, India’s Northern Army Commander referred to the figure of 45 Chinese casualties reported by Russian news agency TASS on February 10.

China unveiled the details of the incident to refute previous disinformation that stated China suffered greater casualties than India or China incited the incident, told Qian Feng, Director at National Strategy Institute,Tsinghua University.
