Cuba: Over 100 killed in deadly air crash, three survive

In a worst air disaster in nearly three decades, more than 100 people were killed in Cuban capital Havana when a Boeing passenger plane crashed soon after taking off on Friday. Miraculously four live passengers were taken to hospital. One of them died while three are being treated.

The ill feted Boeing 737 operated by Cubana de Aviacion crashed into a field near Havana’s Jose Marti airport, sending a thick column of acrid smoke into the air. It was operating a domestic flight to Holguin, a popular tourist destination with pristine beaches, in eastern Cuba. It crashed at 12:08 p.m. (1608 GMT).

Blackened wreckage of Flight CU972 was strewn over the crash site, 20 km (12 miles) south of Havana, the report said.

Five of the passengers and the crew were foreign nationals, two Argentine citizens and an unspecified number of Mexicans were among the dead. This was confirmed by Argentine and Mexican governments.

Cuba: Over 100 killed in deadly air crash, three surviveCuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in broadcast that a high number of people appeared to have been killed. “There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims,” Diaz-Canel said after his visit to the crash site.

He said the fire from the crash had been extinguished and authorities were identifying the bodies of the victims. Authorities were investigating the cause of the crash. He said nine crew members were believed to have been on board, in addition to the passengers.

The 58-year-old Miguel Diaz-Canel, who succeeded Raul Castro as the island’s leader last month, appeared aghast as he surveyed the recovery efforts. He was seen wearing a short sleeved green shirt and surrounded by officials.

Cuban government declared two days of official mourning period. The national flag would be flown at half-mast outside state and military institutions.

Former Cuban president Raul Castro, 86, the head of country’s ruling Communist Party, offered his condolences to the families of the victims. Currently he is recovering from a hernia operation. This was the first time Cuba reported on Castro’s health condition, who handed over the reins of power to his right-hand man Miguel Diaz Canel last month.

State television said the airliner was operated by a foreign crew. European airline Blue Panorama had been leasing a 737-400 plane to Cubana de Aviacion for several months.

In July 1997, Cuba witnessed major airline crash when an Antonov-24 passenger plane fell into the sea off Santiago de Cuba, killing all 44 on aboard. A small Antonov-2 plane was crashed while flying domestic, killing 16 people on board in March 2002.

Trump says Iran agrees to never have nuclear weapons, rejects $300 billion fund claim

Donald Trump said Iran has agreed to never possess nuclear weapons under a proposed framework, while dismissing reports that the US would provide Tehran with a $300 billion reconstruction fund.

Donald Trump statement

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran has agreed to a commitment that it will never develop or possess nuclear weapons, describing it as a central element of a proposed understanding between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking about the ongoing diplomatic efforts, Trump also rejected reports suggesting that the United States planned to provide Iran with a reconstruction or investment package worth $300 billion. He described such claims as false and said no such arrangement had been agreed.

The remarks come as discussions continue over a broader framework aimed at easing tensions between the two countries. According to Trump, the understanding would ensure that Iran remains without nuclear weapons while opening the door for future engagement if the terms are respected.

Questions remain over final agreement details

Despite Trump’s comments, several aspects of the proposed arrangement remain unclear because the full text of the agreement has not yet been made public.

Reports indicate that negotiations have involved discussions on sanctions relief, access to frozen assets and potential economic measures linked to Iran’s compliance with future commitments. However, the exact scope of these provisions has not been officially confirmed.

Another key issue is how compliance would be monitored. Details regarding inspections, verification mechanisms and the handling of Iran’s existing nuclear materials have yet to be fully explained.

Further negotiations expected

Officials have suggested that discussions on technical nuclear matters could continue even after the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding. Such talks would likely focus on implementation and verification measures.

The proposed framework is being closely watched internationally, as any agreement between the United States and Iran could have significant implications for regional stability and global non-proliferation efforts.

For now, Trump has maintained that the core objective remains clear: ensuring that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon while denying reports that Washington has committed to a multibillion-dollar reconstruction fund.
