Supreme Court clears Trump travel ban latest version

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After having faced challenge in the lower courts the US Supreme Court has allowed the President Donald Trump’s latest travel ban provisions to take effect pending appeal.

According to CNN, this is the first time judges have allowed travel ban to go forward in its entirety. It indicates that some of the judges might be distinguishing the latest version from previous ones that are chances of allowing the ban implemented.

The latest, the third edition of the travel ban placed by Trump administration were issued in September. Under the new version of travel ban, varying levels of restrictions on foreign nationals from eight countries: Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Somalia and Yemen are proposed.

Several versions of the travel ban directives have been proposed by US administration since Trump took office on January 20 this year.

Earlier the lower courts in two separate challenges had partially blocked the ban. Trump had announced travel ban, initially for six Muslim majority countries. Nationwide protests erupted in support of those who were returning to join their families in the US.

The court order is considered to be  a significant temporary win for the Trump administration. The new administration has fought all year to impose a travel ban against citizens of several Muslim-majority countries.

The Trump administration argues that President has the authority to slap travel bans in order to protect national security.

The Solicitor General Noel Francisco argued in court saying, “The Constitution and acts of Congress confer on the President broad authority to prevent aliens abroad from entering this country when he deems it in the nation’s interest.” He further said that the ban was necessary “in order to protect national security.”

Meanwhile White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said that he was not surprised by Monday’s order and saying, “We are not surprised by today’s Supreme Court decision permitting immediate enforcement of the President’s proclamation limiting travel from countries presenting heightened risks of terrorism.”

“The proclamation is lawful and essential to protecting our homeland. We look forward to presenting a fuller defense of the proclamation as the pending cases work their way through the courts.”

After Monday order, if not challenged, ban will be enforced on travellers from Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen can now be fully enforced.

President had initially signed an executive order banning all refugee entry and temporarily barring people coming from seven Muslim majority countries. This created chaos at different international airports in US making even the return journey difficult for those who held green card.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

UK bans TikTok

Days after the US banned the China-owned video-sharing app TikTok from government mobile phones, the UK on Thursday, took a similar move on security grounds.

On Thursday, Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden told Parliament that the ban will apply with immediate effect to work phones and other devices used by government ministers and civil services.

He tagged the ban as a precautionary move and also clarified that it does not apply to personal phones and devices.

Dowdwen also informed that the experts conducted a risk assessment of third-party applications in relation to sensitive government data. He said government devices may contain sensitive information which is both prudent and proportionate to restrict the use of certain applications, particularly when it comes to apps where a large amount of data can be stored and accessed.

Last month, the US government directed the federal agencies to delete TikTok from all government-issued mobile phones. The US officials said if TikTok parts ways with ByteDance it would avoid a wider national ban.

Earlier, the European Union, Belgium, and others banned the Chinese app temporarly from employee phones. The decisions were coerced amid the concerns that ByteDance, which is TikTok’s parent company, would leake user data such as location and browsing history to the Chinese government.

Meanwhile, China urged the US to stop unreasonably suppressing TikTok after Washington gave the app ultimatum to part ways with its Chinese owners.
