India logs 3.47 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases and 703 fatalities in 24 hours, Omicron tally stands at 9,692 | Check state-wise list

India recorded 3.47 lakh new Covid cases which are 29,722 more than yesterday taking the active caseload to 20,18,825. The country reported 703 fatalities in the last 24 hours taking the overall death toll to 4,88,396. According to the health bulletin, the daily positivity rate has reached 17.94 percent, while the weekly positivity rate is at 16.56 per cent.

On 20 Jan 2022, there were 3,17,532 new cases, 380 deaths and 19,24,051 active cases, said Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan. The active cases comprise 5.23 per cent of the total infections, as per the health bulletin.

In the last 24 hours, 2,51,777 persons have recovered from the viral disease, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 3,60,58,806. According to the government, Covid-19 deaths were significantly less in the third wave of coronavirus in comparison to the second wave.

9,692 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus detected in India so far.

Here is the list of statewise Covid-19 cases in the country in the last 24 hours.

Andhra Pradesh reported 12,615 new Covid-19 cases taking the active caseload to 53,871. The state recorded 5 fatalities and 3,674 recoveries.

Kerala logged 46,387 fresh Covid-19 cases, an all-time high for a single day taking the active tally to 199,041. The state reported 43,529 COVID-19 cases, reported on May 12, 2021, which was the highest so far. 32 fatalities were recorded in the state.

Delhi reported 12,306 new Covid-19 cases and the active cases in the city stands at 78,112. The positivity rate in the city has dipped down to 22 percent from 28 percent. The national capital recorded 43 new deaths which are the highest since June.

Jammu and Kashmir recorded 5,992 fresh Covid-19 cases, its biggest single-day spike in infections so far, pushing the tally to 3,78,661. 7 new fatalities were reported raising the death toll to 4,586. The active cases stand at 31,044.

Maharashtra reported 45,932 new Covid-19 cases with 52,025 recoveries and 37 deaths. The state has 2,62,354 active cases.

Goa reported 3,390 new Covid-19 cases, 9 deaths. The active tally reaches 2,22,497, and the fatality count mounts to 3,585. The state’s positivity rate rises to 40.86 per cent.

Karnataka reported 47,754 new Covid-19 cases and 29 fatalities. The overall active tally has reached 2,93,261.

Uttar Pradesh reported 18,429 Covid-19 cases taking the active caseload to 97,329. The state had recorded 10 more fatalities.

West Bengal reported 10,959 new Covid-19 cases and 37 deaths. The active tally reaches 1,44,809.

Haryana logged 9,558 fresh Covid-19 cases and 6 more deaths. The active cases in the state are 61,643.

Congress leader Pawan Khera suffered another legal setback on Friday after the Supreme Court of India declined to extend protection in a case linked to his remarks about Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.

A bench of the apex court refused to interfere with an earlier order that had stayed the transit anticipatory bail granted to Khera by the Telangana High Court. This decision leaves the Congress leader open to possible arrest by Assam Police in connection with the case.

During the hearing, Khera’s counsel sought interim protection, but the court declined the request and advised him to approach the appropriate court in Assam for relief. The bench clarified that the Guwahati High Court should decide any bail plea independently and on its merits.

“Am I a terrorist?” remark during hearing

While seeking protection, Khera’s legal team expressed concern over the urgency of the situation. In court, his counsel remarked, “Am I a terrorist?” highlighting the plea for temporary relief until a fresh bail application could be filed.

The Supreme Court also raised concerns over the submission of incorrect documents during the proceedings, adding another layer to the legal complications faced by the Congress leader.

Case linked to remarks on CM’s wife

The case stems from a press conference held earlier this month, where Khera made allegations regarding the citizenship status and financial assets of the Assam Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.

He had claimed that she possessed multiple passports and owned undisclosed overseas properties. These allegations were strongly denied by the Chief Minister’s family, who termed them fabricated and misleading.

Legal battle intensifies

Earlier, the Telangana High Court had granted Khera temporary transit anticipatory bail, allowing him time to seek relief from a competent court in Assam. However, the Supreme Court stayed that order following a challenge by Assam authorities, escalating the legal battle.

With the latest ruling, Khera is now expected to move the Guwahati High Court for anticipatory bail as the case continues to unfold.
