A 28-year-old television journalist, Santanu Bhowmik, was beaten to death by activists of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) on Wednesday. The killing has sparked widespread protests in the state and forcing the district administration to impose a curfew in and around Agartala.

Bhowmik, a reporter with local television news channel Deen Raat which is known for its Left-leaning editorial stance, was returning from Mandwai in the West Tripura district to the state capital on Wednesday afternoon when he was allegedly abducted by the IPFT activists. However, there have been some local reports claiming that Bhowmik was beaten up by agitated IPFT activists when he was trying to cover the outfit’s road blockade in Mandwai as the protestors did not want reporters and camerapersons to record the events.

Police sources, however, claim that Bhowmik’s body covered with severe injuries and stab wounds was found between Mandwai and Jirania towns, some 25 kilometers from Agartala. He was rushed to the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital by the police and workers of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) but was declared dead on arrival.

The IPFT has been fighting for a separate state for indigenous Tripura tribals for several years and has often been engaged in violent clashes with CPM cadres as the party’s government under chief minister Manik Sarkar has always been against the idea of bifurcating the state. With Tripura due for Assembly elections later this year, these clashes have intensified in recent months.

The murder of Bhowmik has triggered massive protests, allegedly with the tacit support of CPM cadres, across Tripura and Left leaders have sought to blame the BJP for orchestrating the IPFT movement in a bid to make political in-roads in the state that has seen Manik Sarkar firmly in the chief minister’s saddle for four consecutive terms.

Some local media reports suggested that IPFT supporters at the Mandwai rally called Bhowmik a “CPM activist working against their party” while they assaulted him and his camera person who managed to escape and report the incident to the police at Jirania. Bhowmik and his camera person reportedly had footage of IPFT supporters attacking the CPM office at Mandwai.

Pranab Sarkar, secretary of the Tripura Journalists’ Union, said, “Bhowmik was assaulted in front of police personnel, who remained mute spectators.” Later, media personnel blocked a road leading to chief minister Manik Sarkar’s official residence and sat on a dharna, demanding action against all people, including abettors, who killed Bhowmik.

Meanwhile, the Left has sought to draw parallels between the recent killing of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru by suspected right-wing radicals with the murder of Bhowmik.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that Bhowmik’s murder was indicative of the “RSS-BJP’s time tested recipe of preparing for elections through murder”.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]The BJP has however sought to pin the blame for the murder on the deterioration of law and order in Tripura under Manik Sarkar’s rule.

Luthra brothers

A court in Goa on Monday extended the police custody of Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, the owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub, by five more days in connection with the deadly fire incident that claimed 25 lives on December 6.

The order was passed as investigators sought additional time to question the two accused in the case linked to the blaze at the Anjuna-based nightclub.

Owners were deported after fleeing abroad

According to details placed before the court, the Luthra brothers had left the country following the incident and travelled to Thailand. They were subsequently deported and brought back to India on December 17, after which they were taken into police custody.

Advocate Vishnu Joshi, representing the families of the victims, confirmed that the court granted a five-day extension of police custody for both Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra.

Another co-owner sent to judicial custody

The court also remanded Ajay Gupta, another owner of the nightclub, to judicial custody. Police did not seek an extension of his custody, following which the court passed the order, the victims’ counsel said.

The Anjuna police have registered a case against the Luthra brothers for culpable homicide not amounting to murder along with other relevant offences related to the fire incident.

Delhi High Court issues notice to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi in National Herald case

Delhi High Court has sought responses from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on the ED’s plea challenging a trial court order in the National Herald case.

Published

The Delhi High Court has sought responses from Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on a petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the National Herald case. The petition challenges a trial court order that refused to take cognisance of the agency’s prosecution complaint.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notices to the Gandhis and other accused on the main petition, as well as on the ED’s application seeking a stay on the trial court’s December 16 order. The high court has listed the matter for further hearing on March 12, 2026.

The trial court had ruled that taking cognisance of the ED’s complaint was “impermissible in law” because the investigation was not based on a registered First Information Report (FIR). It observed that the prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was not maintainable in the absence of an FIR for a scheduled offence.

According to the order, the ED’s probe originated from a private complaint rather than an FIR. The court further noted that since cognisance was declined on a legal question, it was not necessary to examine the merits of the allegations at that stage.

The trial court also referred to the complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and the summoning order issued in 2014, stating that despite these developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not register an FIR in relation to the alleged scheduled offence.

The ED has accused Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, and a private company, Young Indian, of conspiracy and money laundering. The agency has alleged that properties worth around Rs 2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which publishes the National Herald newspaper, were acquired through Young Indian.

The agency further claimed that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi held a majority 76 per cent shareholding in Young Indian, which allegedly took over AJL’s assets in exchange for a Rs 90 crore loan.
