According to principal Dr. Lynette Morris, a committee has been established to discuss the students’ demands.

A controversy has sparked over the demand of 7 MBBS students at Kerala College allowing them to wear a hijab-like attire inside the operation theatre. Many across the internet have now started saying that girl students cannot raise a demand for wearing hijab and have raised the issue of patient’s sterility. But what’s the matter and what was the demand made by them?

Afeefa, a 2020 batch MBBS student of the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in a letter to the principal stating the dissatisfaction of some of the Muslim girl students from different batches of MBBS wrote a letter is regarding the disallowance for covering their heads inside the operation theatre.

The letter noted, in accordance with their religious convictions it is mandated for Muslim women to wear hijab under all circumstances. The letter said, that hijab-wearing Muslims are facing a difficult situation on how to strike a balance between adhering to hijab regulations and carrying out surgical duties complying with the regulations of the hospital and the operation theatre. The letter can refuel the heated discussions over hijab in campus.

It further noted proposals for alternatives based on the attire used by medical professionals around the globe and the choices provided by companies that produce clothing for surgical procedures.

The students in the letter have requested the principal to allow them to wear long sleeve scrub jackets’ and ‘surgical hoods’ as an alternative to hijab, which would be in compliance with maintaining sterile precautions and there hijab-wearing conviction will also be followed.

The letter further requested the principal to look into the matter on an urgent basis and consider their request. The letter had the undersigned names of 6 other students supporting the request letter facing the same problem.

As soon as the matter came to light people started sharing their opinions on this matter, as one user said that these students do not care about the hygiene and safety of the patients rather they are only concerned about their religious beliefs. While others raised questions that they should also replace their books with religious ones.

According to principal Dr. Lynette Morris, a committee has been established to discuss the students’ demands. Addressing the media, the principal said at this time, the institution is unable to accommodate the pupils’ requests. She added operation theatres are kept to international standards, and the safety of the patient comes first.

She added the committee established for this purpose would come up with a resolution within 10 days and he cannot take a decision on this issue alone.

The appeal by the students is made in light of the events that occurred in Karnataka last year following the then BJP-headed BS Bommai government banning the hijab on campuses. One side of the debate claimed that religious practice had no place in educational institutions, while the other saw the ban on the hijab as repression of minority rights.

Cried over gaza, not a word on Bangladesh: Yogi Adityanath attacks opposition in up assembly

Yogi Adityanath criticised the opposition in the UP Assembly, accusing them of selective outrage over Gaza while remaining silent on violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition during proceedings in the State Assembly, accusing rival parties of indulging in selective outrage and appeasement politics while remaining silent on incidents involving Hindus in neighbouring countries, particularly Bangladesh.

Referring to recent incidents across the border, the Chief Minister said the Opposition raises its voice on international issues selectively but avoids speaking out when minorities, especially Hindus, are targeted in nearby nations.

“You shed tears over developments in Gaza, but not a single word comes out when a Dalit youth is killed in Bangladesh,” Adityanath said in the Assembly, alleging that such silence exposes the Opposition’s political priorities.

The Chief Minister further claimed that incidents of violence against Hindus would not have occurred had Pakistan and Bangladesh not been created, reiterating that issues are often viewed through the prism of vote bank politics. He said candle marches are organised for global events, but killings of Hindus in Pakistan or Bangladesh do not evoke similar responses.

Adityanath also called for a condemnation resolution in the Assembly, stating that it should ideally come from the Leader of the Opposition. He said such a resolution should clearly condemn the killing and convey a warning to the Bangladesh government.

Allegations over illegal immigration

Targeting the Opposition on the issue of illegal immigration, the Chief Minister alleged that they support Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas. He claimed that when authorities take action to expel illegal immigrants, Opposition leaders come out in their defence, alleging that many of them have been facilitated with voter registrations and Aadhaar cards.

Meanwhile, tensions between India and Bangladesh have been visible following recent developments. India summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner for the second time in a week amid concerns arising from incidents in the neighbouring country.

The summons came in the backdrop of protests in Bangladesh following the killing of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi and the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in separate incidents. Dipu Das, a 27-year-old youth from Mymensingh district, was beaten to death by a mob over alleged blasphemy on December 18, and his body was later set on fire, triggering widespread outrage.

The Interim Government of Bangladesh condemned the incident. Education Adviser C R Abrar visited the bereaved family on behalf of the government, expressed condolences, and assured them of financial and welfare assistance. The Office of the Chief Adviser also reiterated its resolve to protect all citizens and ensure justice in the case.

The killing has once again raised concerns at the international level over the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, with minority groups demanding strict action against those responsible.

At least 10 people lost their lives after a private sleeper bus caught fire following a collision with a truck on National Highway-48 in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district. The accident took place in the early hours of Thursday when the bus was travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga.

According to police, the incident occurred around 2:30 am when a truck coming from the opposite direction reportedly jumped the divider and rammed into the bus. The impact triggered a massive fire, leaving several passengers trapped inside the vehicle.

A senior police officer said preliminary findings suggest the truck may have struck the fuel tank of the bus, causing diesel to gush out and ignite. While a few passengers managed to escape, eight bus passengers and the truck driver were confirmed dead.

Bus carrying 32 people gutted in blaze

The sleeper bus, operated by a private travel company, had 32 people on board, including the driver and conductor. Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly, giving passengers little time to react.

A commuter who was travelling on the same stretch of road said the bus had overtaken his vehicle moments before the crash. He added that the truck crossed the divider and hit the bus near the diesel tank area, leading to the fire.

One of the surviving passengers recalled scenes of panic inside the bus. He said people were screaming as the fire broke out, the doors could not be opened, and some passengers broke the window glass to escape. Despite efforts to rescue others, the spreading flames made it extremely difficult.

Traffic disruption and reactions from leaders

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion on the highway, with commuters stranded for several hours as emergency services worked to clear the site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of those who died and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar also expressed grief over the tragedy and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. The state BJP president shared similar sentiments, offering condolences to the bereaved families.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
