The Karnataka Police report that a truck carrying tomatoes worth about 21 lakh rupees from Kolar in Karnataka to Jaipur in Rajasthan has gone missing. The vehicle, which belongs to Kolar-based Mehat Transport, departed on July 27 but has not yet arrived.

This incident happened while tomato prices across the nation were on the rise.

The owner of the Kolar mandi has complained about the loss of the truck and the tomatoes. Since the truck and its cargo have gone missing the owner has been unable to get in touch with the driver, according to the authorities.

Police suspected that the cleaner and the driver had stolen both the car and the tomatoes. The investigation is currently in progress.

Similar to this incident, a gang of unidentified people allegedly stole 1.5 lakh rupees worth of tomatoes from a farm in Karnataka’s Hassan district in July. The angry farmer reported the incident to the police, explaining that when he arrived at his farm, he was horrified to find that all his crops had disappeared.

According to the farmer, the thieves entered the farm’s grounds carrying about 50 to 60 bags, which they quickly loaded with tomatoes worth Rs. 1.5 lakh before making a rapid getaway.

Tomato prices in Tamil Nadu are still rising, with the wholesale cost of the red fruit reaching Rs 200 per kg in the state capital. Tomatoes were being sold in some retail stores for Rs 185 per kg, while the wholesale market was charging Rs 200 per kg. Additionally, traders predicted that the price will likely increase to Rs 250 per kg in a week.

Tomato prices in Delhi-NCR significantly increased; they went from costing Rs 20–30 per kg to Rs 110–160 per kg. The fast-food chain Subway has removed tomatoes from its menu in reaction to the growing price of tomatoes.

IMD issues red alert for heavy rainfall in Kerala

The IMD issued a red alert for the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha, warning residents and authorities about the potential for further heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for four districts in Kerala till May 21, after heavy pre-monsoon rainfall swept across the southern state on Sunday. The intense downpours affected numerous regions, including the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

Considering the severe weather conditions, the IMD issued a red alert for the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha, warning residents and authorities about the potential for further heavy rains.

The weather department has also issued an orange alert in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram until May 22, forecasting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall .

A bulletin issued by the IMD on Sunday stated that strong westerly and south-westerly winds are expected to dominate the lower levels of the state from May 19 to 23. This weather pattern is likely to result in widespread rainfall across isolated areas of Kerala from May 19 to 22. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated regions on May 23.

Given the potential hazards posed by heavy rains, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged residents to remain vigilant. The forecasted heavy rainfall over a short period raises concerns about flash floods and urban waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas. It is reported that prolonged rainfall may also lead to landslides. Consequently, authorities advised residents, particularly those in hilly and coastal regions, to exercise caution and stay alert.

Reportedly, stringent directives have been issued to the District Superintendent of Police, Sub Divisional Magistrates, Regional Transport Officers, and Tehsildars to enforce a ban on tourist movements.

Meanwhile, after the Sunday rains visuals across social media showed houses and shops in some areas were inundated. Additionally, canals traversing the capital city and its suburbs have overflowed. Affected residents claimed that the waterlogging in the capital and surrounding areas resulted from the failure to conduct pre-monsoon cleaning of canals and drainage systems.
