Rajeev Chandrasekhar further affirmed that the government will assist the citizens in filing FIR against the social media companies.

Amid increasing concerns and outrage over a series of deepfake videos on social media, Union Minister of Electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Friday that the Centre will appoint an officer to check such content. He said that an officer will be entrusted to ensure action against deepfake content.

The Union Minister said that social media platforms have been given seven days time to align their terms of use, as per the IT rules. Rajeev Chandrasekhar further affirmed that the government will assist the citizens in filing First Information Report or FIR against the social media companies.

He noted that the First Information Report will be registered against the intermediary and if they disclose the details from where the content has originated then the case will be filed against the entity that has posted the content.

A few days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also flagged the misuse of AI or artificial intelligence for creating deepfake videos and called it a big concern. The Prime Minister said that during the times of Artificial Intelligence, it is important that technology should be used responsibly. Notably, the Centre has said that the creation and circulation of deepfakes carry a strong penalty Rs 1 lakh in fine and three years in jail.

Evidently, the videos have sparked massive worry about fake videos targeting public figures and the power of Artificial Intelligence to create deepfakes that can mislead the world.

Earlier in November, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued an advisory to social media platforms underlining the legal provisions that cover such deepfakes and the penalties their creation and circulation may attract.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar had said that it is a legal obligation for online platforms to avert the spread of misinformation. The statement from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology mentioned that the online platform should remove any such content when reported within 36 hours of such reporting and ensure expeditious action, well within the timeframes stipulated under the IT Rules 2021, and disable access to the content or information.

It further added that the government is committed to ensuring safety and trust for Indians in the digital space.

The IMD issued a red alert for the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha, warning residents and authorities about the potential for further heavy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for four districts in Kerala till May 21, after heavy pre-monsoon rainfall swept across the southern state on Sunday. The intense downpours affected numerous regions, including the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

Considering the severe weather conditions, the IMD issued a red alert for the districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha, warning residents and authorities about the potential for further heavy rains.

The weather department has also issued an orange alert in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram until May 22, forecasting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall .

A bulletin issued by the IMD on Sunday stated that strong westerly and south-westerly winds are expected to dominate the lower levels of the state from May 19 to 23. This weather pattern is likely to result in widespread rainfall across isolated areas of Kerala from May 19 to 22. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated regions on May 23.

Given the potential hazards posed by heavy rains, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged residents to remain vigilant. The forecasted heavy rainfall over a short period raises concerns about flash floods and urban waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas. It is reported that prolonged rainfall may also lead to landslides. Consequently, authorities advised residents, particularly those in hilly and coastal regions, to exercise caution and stay alert.

Reportedly, stringent directives have been issued to the District Superintendent of Police, Sub Divisional Magistrates, Regional Transport Officers, and Tehsildars to enforce a ban on tourist movements.

Meanwhile, after the Sunday rains visuals across social media showed houses and shops in some areas were inundated. Additionally, canals traversing the capital city and its suburbs have overflowed. Affected residents claimed that the waterlogging in the capital and surrounding areas resulted from the failure to conduct pre-monsoon cleaning of canals and drainage systems.
