As April enters its final stretch, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an intensification of heatwave conditions across North India, with Delhi, Haryana and Punjab next in line to face the scorching temperatures that have already gripped much of Central India.
According to IMD data, cities in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region continue to record some of the highest temperatures in the country for the fourth consecutive day, with Chandrapur touching 45.8°C, Brahmapuri 45.2°C, and Akola 44.8°C. Jharsuguda in Odisha led the charts on Tuesday with a blistering 46.2°C — 5 degrees above normal.
Heat spreads from Central to North India
The searing heat first began its surge over regions such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. It is now expected to engulf parts of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, marking a northward shift in the heatwave pattern. The IMD has predicted a rise of 2 to 3°C in maximum temperatures across central and northwest India over the coming week, extending the oppressive weather further.
Eastern India is also set to experience a spike in daytime temperatures, especially in Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, where warm and humid nights are expected to persist till April 25.
Persistent high temperatures in key regions
Vidarbha has been among the hottest zones in the country, with no relief in sight. Chandrapur remained the hottest Indian city for two straight days earlier this week, registering its highest April temperature since 2022. The region, including cities like Akola, Nagpur, Yavatmal and Wardha, has faced unrelenting heat, with daytime temperatures hovering above 42°C for at least 11 days since April 3.
Meanwhile, many parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan have consistently recorded temperatures between 42°C and 45°C for 10–12 days this month. Other notable highs recorded on Tuesday include 44.7°C in Dhenkanal, 44.6°C in Sambhalpur, and 44.4°C in Raipur, Daltonganj and Khajuraho.
Upcoming heatwave forecast
IMD’s warning for the coming days includes:
- East Madhya Pradesh: Heatwave till April 28
- West Uttar Pradesh: Heatwave till April 27
- Bihar, East UP, Odisha: Heatwave till April 26
- Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, West MP: Heatwave till April 26
- Gangetic West Bengal: Brief heatwaves from April 23–26
- Jharkhand: Heatwave on April 25 and 26
Despite the soaring day temperatures, night temperatures are expected to remain relatively normal across most regions.
