Sushant Singh Rajput's father appeals against release of films, books on late actor's life

Two months after the Delhi High Court’s dismissal of halting the release of a movie based on Sushant Singh Rajput’s life, the late actor’s father Kishor Kumar Singh filed a new plea against the release of books and films based on his late son’s life.

Due to the late bollywood actor’s father taking legal action against the production of films and publication of books based on the actor’s life, a debate has arised on privacy and dignity even after his death. The purpose of this legal step is to prevent the distribution of movies and books that are allegedly based on Sushant Singh Rajput’s life.

Earlier in July this year, the father sought an interlocutory injunction against a film titled, ‘Nyay: The Justice and its Filmmakers’. However, this plea was rejected by the court, stating that the right to privacy of Sushant ceased to exist after his demise. Reportedly, the late actor’s father filed a fresh appeal in Delhi High Court. He listed four movies and two books allegedly inspired by Sushant’s life. He filed the petition to protect his late son’s rights to privacy, publicity and personality.

The lawyer representing the actor’s father explained that a movie about Sushant Singh’s life cannot be made by the parties because the right to privacy of his father also includes his family life. He further added that a bench of nine judges in Puttuswamy case had stated that dignified death is included in the right to privacy. He said that his rights of privacy are being infringed by making a mockery out of his death. Puttuswamy case stated that it is the court’s responsibility to include as many fundamental rights as possible.

Sushant Singh Rajput unfortunately passed away on 14 June 2020 and was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room in Bandra. The conclusion of the official post-mortem reports was death due to asphyxia and the cause of death was ruled out as suicide.

Moviegoers attending a late-night screening of “Pushpa 2” at a multiplex in Nagpur, Maharashtra, found themselves in the midst of a real-life action scene when police stormed the cinema hall to apprehend a man linked to serious criminal activities.

The arrest of Vishal Meshram occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday and left the audience in shock, although police reassured them that they could continue watching the film as they took the suspect into custody.

Vishal Meshram had been evading law enforcement for 10 months and was reportedly traced due to authorities discovering his interest in the newly released film, as stated by an official from the Pachpaoli police station. Meshram’s criminal record includes 27 cases, with charges for two murders and drug trafficking. He has a history of violent behavior, having been known to assault police officers in the past.

Law enforcement agencies had been diligently pursuing him using cyber surveillance techniques and monitoring his movements in a newly acquired sports utility vehicle (SUV). Upon confirming his location on Thursday, police deflated the tires of his vehicle parked outside the cinema to hinder any escape attempts.

As the film reached its climax, Meshram was fully engrossed when police entered the hall, quickly surrounding him and executing the arrest without giving him a chance to resist. He is currently being held in the Nagpur Central Jail and is set to be transferred to a facility in Nashik soon.

“Pushpa 2: The Rule,” starring Allu Arjun, is the sequel to the 2021 Telugu hit “Pushpa: The Rise” and was released on December 5 in various dubbed versions, including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam.
