7 coaches of Shaktipunj Express derail in Sonbhadra district, no casualties reported

All passengers who were stranded near the accident site were shifted to the remaining coaches and were proceeded to their destination by7:28 am. This is the third derailment within a month

In yet another incident of train derailment – the third within a month – seven coaches of the Jabalpur-bound Shaktipunj Express went off tracks near Fafrakund railway station in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district at around 6.25 am on Thursday. However, unlike the earlier derailments, no casualties were reported after the mishap and stranded passengers were promptly shifted to the remaining coaches of the same train which then left the spot at 7.28 am.

The Shaktipunj Express is a daily service between Howrah and Jabalpur and passes through the key mining areas of Jharkhand.

“The accident occurred at 6:25 am and we have already cleared out the site. All passengers were put on the remaining coaches and by 7.28 am, all of them had left the spot. All of them are safe and no one was injured in the accident,” said Anil Saxena, chief spokesperson of the railway ministry.

The cause of the derailment would be ascertained after an inquiry into the accident, railway sources said.

However, it remains to be seen how the Union railway ministry – which recently witnessed a complete change of guard from its minister to the chairperson of the Railway Board and among other senior officials – would address the issue of recurring railway mishaps.

On August 19, 22 people had been killed and over 150 injured when 13 coaches of the Kalinga-Utkal Express derailed near Muzaffarnagar in UP. Days later – on August 23 – the Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express collided with a dumper and went off tracks in UP’s Auraiya district, injuring over 100 people. On August 25, four coaches of local train in Mumbai had also derailed due to a technical fault injuring six passengers.

The derailment of the Utkal Express and the Kaifiyat Express in quick succession had forced the resignation of then Railway Board chief AK Mittal and suspension of a few other senior officials while then Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu had also offered to resign taking moral responsibility of the accidents.

While Mittal was replaced with Ashwani Lohani – who was then the chairman and managind director of Air India – Prabhu was moved from the railway portfolio to the commerce ministry on Sunday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi reshuffled his council of ministers, appointing Piyush Goyal as the new rail minister.

However, on Thursday, after the Shaktipunj express derailed, there was a studied silence from the top brass of the railway ministry with neither minister Goyal nor Railway Board chief Lohani issuing any statement on the mishap.
