Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about the challenges of financing his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s wedding, admitting that he took on acting jobs to manage the expenses. Known for his work in indie cinema, Kashyap confessed that hosting a lavish wedding wasn’t easy, with costs comparable to producing a small-budget film.
Aaliyah Kashyap tied the knot with Shane Gregoire in an elegant yet intimate ceremony in Mumbai, surrounded by family and close friends. Reflecting on the event, Kashyap shared that the financial pressure pushed him to juggle filmmaking and acting roles.
A filmmaker’s journey through a milestone
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kashyap revealed, “I had to take up more acting projects just to cover the wedding expenses. As an indie filmmaker, it’s hard to afford such grand celebrations.” Despite the challenges, he expressed relief and calmness now that the milestone event is behind him.
Kashyap also discussed his plans for 2025, emphasizing a shift towards self-care and personal growth. He shared that he intends to step back from directing for a while to focus on relaxation, rejuvenation, and enjoying films.
A traditional yet modern celebration
The wedding, which blended traditional rituals with a contemporary touch, was a joyous occasion. Kashyap took to Instagram to share heartfelt moments from the ceremony, writing, “Ye bhi gayi … @shanegregoire my Silly, take care of her. And I will get back to my stubborn self. Thank you @artb and @rheadewan for making it happen so beautifully. Thank you everyone for coming.”
The couple’s love story has been well-documented on social media, with Aaliyah announcing their engagement in May 2023. A popular influencer and content creator, Aaliyah often shares glimpses of her life with her audience.
Kashyap’s critique of the industry
The Dev D director also opened up about his frustrations with the Hindi film industry. He revealed plans to relocate to South India in 2025, citing dissatisfaction with Bollywood’s focus on profit, remakes, and the star-making culture.
“The obsession with box office numbers and remakes stifles creativity. Working with entitled actors has also been a challenge,” Kashyap remarked.
As he moves forward, Kashyap is set on nurturing his creative freedom while prioritizing his well-being—a philosophy he believes will shape his future endeavors both in and outside of cinema.
