Land for jobs scam

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday raided several locations across multiple cities in Bihar—including at properties owned by some Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) linked leaders— in connection with its ongoing investigation into the purported land for jobs scam.

Reports said the ongoing raids cover raids at the premises of some RJD leaders in Patna and Phulwari Sharif. RJD top brass and former Bihar Chief Ministers, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi were recently grilled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the case.

The CBI chargesheet has named Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi and 14 others in the purported case which allegedly involves people being given employment in the railways in exchange for land parcels parcels gifted or sold at cheap rates to the Yadav family and its associates.

The accused have been charged of criminal conspiracy and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and have been summoned on March 15. The ED, which probes financial crimes, has filed its case stemming from the same CBI complaint, under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

On March 7, Lalu Yadav, a former railway minister was questioned by the CBI, day after his wife and former Bihar CM Rabri Devi was grilled by the probe agency in the same case.

The CBI case, which names the Yadav couple and their daughters Misa and Hema, among others, is based on allegations that Yadav and his family members bought land at a discount in exchange for jobs while he served as Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009.

The CBI in a chargsheet claims that the accused plotted with the former GM of Central Railways and the CPO of Central Railways to employ people as stand-ins for land either in their names or in the names of their close relatives. The cost to purchase this land was far less than the market rate and below the current circle rate.

The CBI statement claimed that the candidates were also accused of using fake TC and submitting fake certified documents to the Ministry of Railways. Lalu Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya has said he is being harassed and warned that she wouldn’t spare anyone if something happens to him.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday ended the speculations of his switching allegiance to BJP as he called Rahul Gandhi “our leader” and urged Congress workers to join the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in the State.

Taking to X, Nath said that the Congress workers were excited to welcome the Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. He said our leader Rahul Gandhi has taken to the streets across the country and announced a decisive fight against injustice, oppression and exploitation.

Earlier, Nath increased more suspense to the rumours as he neither denied nor accepted what has been the hot rumour doing the buzz in the capital.

Speaking to reporters, Nath asked the media to lower their excitement over speculation of him and his son Nakul Kamal Nath joining the BJP and said he is not denying it and will inform them of the news if there is something in the coming days.

Also, he and his son Nakul Kamal Nath arrived in Delhi today reportedly to meet the top leaders of the BJP. However, Congress rejected the rumours of him joining the BJP and recalled what former PM Indira Gandhi said about Nath.

Earlier in Jharkhand, Gandhi said Congress stands for Jal, Jungle, and Jamin of the tribal people, for education and employment of youths. He said economic imbalance, demonetization, GST and unemployment have ruined the future of the youths in the country.  On the way to Bokaro, he interacted with coal miners and their children at Godhar Kali Basti in Dhanbad district.

On January 14, Congress kicked off the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra from Manipur’s Thoubal. The yatra aims to cover over 6,700 kilometres over 67 days, going through 110 districts.
