The Punjab government signed an agreement with the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) for the purchase of 1200 MW power from solar projects.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday announced regarding the aggrement and said the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited had issued tenders for inviting bidders for the procurement of power from solar projects in the state and from rest parts of the country.

As per the proposed agreement, 1000 MW power will be purchased from Bikaner, Rajasthan anb Gujarat’s Bhuj. And another 200 MW will be purchased from Hoshiarpur in Punjab.

Mann said the SJVN Green Energy Ltd. had earlier bidded for Rs 2.59 per unit for purchase from Bikaner and Bhuj. But later after negotitations it was finalised at Rs 2.53 per unit.

He added for the power procurement from Hoshiarpur, the bidding was made for Rs 2.79 per unit which was later settled at Rs 2.75 after negotitations.

The CM said the negotiations saved the government a total of Rs 431 crore, which would immensely beneifit the state and the projects will soon be put into place.

Mann said the rates have been fixed for the next 25 years and would remain constant throughout.

Hitting at his predecessors, Mann said the earlier governments had plundered the tax payers money to fill the pockets of the private players by signing these agreements. He added between 2007-2017, no project was below Rsa 7 but this agreement has been made at a very reasonable cost.

Mann said the estimated production of renewable power on a daily basis is 83 lakh units and it would further add on to supply power to the tubewells in the day time as solar energy can be extracted during the day.

Charting out his government’s plans for power storage and supply in the future, the Chief Minister said Punjab is soon going to be the first in implementing a policy for banking the power that will be a revolutionary step in supplying cheap, regular and uninterrupted power to a large mass.

Mann further said the government will continue its policy of supplying free power to the farmers across the state and said there is no such proposal to impose any rate on the free power supply to the food growers.
