In what is being considered a crucial test for the opposition alliance INDIA against the BJP-led NDA before the elections in five states later this year and the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the results for byelections to seven assembly seats in six states will be announced today.

At locations set up in the various states, the voting process started at 8 am.

On September 5, elections were held for the seven seats: Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Puthuppally in Kerala, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura.

Both the Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, where voting participation was 50.77%, and the Dumri electorate in Jharkhand, where a total of 64.84 percent of 2.98 lakh people cast ballots, saw the INDIA coalition present a unified face during the by-election.

Of the seven seats, the BJP held three (Dhanpur, Bageshwar, and Dhupguri) and the Samajwadi Party one (Ghosi), CPI(M) one (Boxanagar), JMM one (Dumri), and the Congress one (Puthuppally).

Following the resignation of SP MLA and OBC leader Dara Singh Chauhan, who re-joined the BJP, the Ghosi seat in Uttar Pradesh became vacant.

According to District Magistrate Anuradha Pal on Thursday, the counting for the Bageshwar assembly byelection in Uttarakhand will take place at 14 tables with 130 poll workers on duty.

After the passing of its MLA and cabinet member Chandan Ram Das in April of this year, the Bageshwar seat became vacant. Since 2007, he has won the position four times.

Before the results of the Dumri assembly byelection are counted in Jharkhand, candidates for the NDA and the INDIA alliance are crossing their fingers. An election official announced that the counting site has been established in Krishi Bazar Samiti, Pachambha, in the Giridih district.

There will be 24 rounds of counting, and around 70 officials have been sent out for the exercise. Naman Priesh Lakra, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Election Officer in Giridih.

According to a top election official, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken the necessary actions in Tripura to conduct the counting in a transparent manner.

At Sonamura Girls’ High School, ballots for both the Boxanagar and Dhanpur seats will be counted. The counting centre is under strong protection, according to Vishal Kumar, the district magistrate for Sepahijala.

Tafajjal Hussain of the BJP is running there against Mizan Hussain of the CPI(M), who was a candidate in the last assembly election but was defeated.

According to reports, the BJP legislature party is expected to meet on Friday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to elect its leader formally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several senior BJP leaders are likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post following the BJP’s strong performance in the elections. Other names reportedly under consideration include Samik Bhattacharya, Sukanta Majumdar and Swapan Dasgupta.

The political developments come a day after Governor RN Ravi dissolved the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and state cabinet following the completion of the Assembly election process. The dissolution order was issued under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution after outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declined to submit her resignation despite the Trinamool Congress losing power.

The BJP secured a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state. The election outcome marks a major political shift in West Bengal, where the BJP is set to form a government for the first time.
