Sheila Dikshit

Veteran Congress leader and three-times Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit passed away in Delhi following a cardiac arrest today (Saturday, April 20) at the age of 81 years.

Sheila Dikshit had been unwell for some time and was admitted to Escorts hospital a few days ago. She died at 3.55 pm.

The hospital, in a statement, said despite all resuscitative efforts, Sheila Dikshit died after a cardiac arrest.

“A multi-disciplinary team of doctors, led by Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, carried out the advanced resuscitative measures. Her condition stabilised temporarily. However, she had another cardiac arrest and despite all the resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55pm on 20th of July 2019,” the hospital said in a statement.

Dikshit was the chief minister of Delhi for three terms from 1998 to 2013: the longest serving Delhi CM, till the advent of Aam Aadmi Party.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, under her leadership, the Congress party managed to push AAP candidates on the third place in five of the seven seats in Delhi, besides registering growth in its vote share.

She was appointed president of the city unit in January this year after the incumbent Ajay Maken stepped down citing health issues.

Despite being an octagenarian, Dikshit led the party in Lok Sabha polls and herself contested against Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari from the North East Delhi seat. She lost by over 3.66 lakh votes.

President Ram Nath Kovind extended his condolences to the family of the Congress leader and said that her term was a period of momentous transformation for the capital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Deeply saddened by the demise of Sheila Dikshit Ji. Blessed with a warm and affable personality, she made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi’s development. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti,” tweeted Modi.

“Lifelong congresswoman and as three time CM of Delhi she transformed the face of Delhi. Our condolences to her family and friends. Hope they find strength in this time of grief,” the Congress tweeted.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he was “devastated” to hear the passing away of the veteran leader.

“I’m devastated to hear about passing away of Shiela Dikshit Ji, beloved daughter of Congress Party, with whom I shared a close personal bond. My condolences to her family&citizens of Delhi, whom she served selflessly as a 3 term CM,in this time of great grief,” Rahul said in his tweet.

“Just now got to know about extremely terrible news about the passing away of Sheila Dikshit ji. It’s a huge loss for Delhi & her contribution will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to her family members. May her soul rest in peace,” tweeted Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Sheila Dikshit, after her stint as Delhi chief minister, was sworn in as Kerala’s Governor in 2004, but resigned in just six months.

She had started off as a reluctant politician, and cut her political teeth assisting her father-in-law, a veteran Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Uma Shankar Dikshit, who was a minster in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet.

Sheila Dikshit first became an MP from the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh in 1984. She was a close associated of former PM Rajiv Gandhi and a minister in his cabinet.

Born in Punjab’s Kapurthala, Sheila Dikshit was credited with numerous people-friendly programmes.

Sheila Dikshit’s son Sandeep Dikshit is also a Congress leader who was a parliamentarian from Delhi. She lived in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area.

AAP used Delhi liquor scam money to fund Goa campaign: Enforcement Directorate

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) allegedly used money generated from a purported liquor scam to fund its election campaign in Goa in 2022, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged in a chargesheet filed in the case on Thursday.

In the chargesheet, the ED has claimed that investigation trail in the Delhi liquor scam case has revealed AAP used part of the funds generated in the scam for its poll campaign in Goa.

AAP managed to win two seats in the Goa Assembly elections.

The ED chargesheet claimed that Rs 70 lakh in cash payments were made to volunteers of AAP’s survey teams, adding that party’s communications chief Vijay Nair allegedly told “certain persons” who were involved in AAP’s campaign related work, to receive payments in cash.

The probe agency’s chargesheet has further alleged that, on AAP’s behalf, Nair received over Rs 100 crore in payments from a group comprising of YSRCP MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, his son Raghav Magunta, Aurobindo Pharma director P Sarath Chandra Reddy and Telangana CM KCR’s daughter Kavitha Kalvakuntla.

The ED further alleged that Abhishek Boinpally, a Hyderabad-based businessman, in conspiracy with Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s aide Dinesh Arora had facilitated the transfer of the kickback money.

The central agency also filed a supplementary chargesheet in the case against AAP’s Vijay Nair, businessmen Sarath Reddy, Binoy Babu, Abhishek Boinpally and Amit Arora. The chargesheet, which was produced before Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court today, did not include Manish Sisodia’s name.

Further investigation in the case is ongoing, the ED told the court.

In a statement, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said the allegations levelled by the ED as “completely fictional”.

The liquor scheme came to the fore after Delhi L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena alleged irregularities in the implementation of Delhi’s Excise Policy 2021-22 and recommended a CBI probe into the matter.

The alleged scam also came under the ED’s radar who are probing a money trail it generated.

In July 2022, AAP government junked the Delhi Excise Policy, which was implemented in November 2021.

Delhi Police has beefed up security ahead of Republic Day

Additional pickets have been deployed, anti-terror measures intensified and patrolling enhanced in the national capital ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.

An official statement, Friday, said that all Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACPs) and Station House Officers (SHOs) have been holding meetings with members of the Residents Welfare Association and Market Welfare Associations and briefing them about security measures in place for Republic Day.

Delhi Police has been actively urging people on social media to alert security authorities about any suspicious person, activity or article, the statement said.

The police said that surprise checks are being conducted at hotels, guest houses and ‘dharamshalas’ to ensure no suspicious or anti-social elements have illegally occupied the space, adding that tenant and servant verifications are also being done.

Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dependra Pathak, while hailing the “robust” security checks and terror measures, assured that the police will not allow any terror plot to succeed on their watch.

He said that several measures aimed at creating awareness among the public, such as organizing public meeting and alerting market and resident welfare associations are being run to ensure mischievous elements with nefarious designs are unable to creep in.

Officials said that anti-terror measures have been intensified in coordination with other security agencies since Delhi has always been a target for terrorists or anti-social elements.

They said the officers are on high alert and extra pickets have been deployed on bordering areas to ensure no mischievous elements gain entry into the national capital.
