A picture of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Om Prakash Sharma went viral on the internet wherein he could be seen consuming alcohol.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party Badshahpur shared the picture on Twitter and slammed the politician. The AAP said these are the Delhi BJP MLAs who oppose the Delhi government’s liquor policy during the day and enjoy a free bottle with each other at night.

Have a look at the viral picture here:

OP Sharma is the BJP MLA and a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly for Vishwas Nagar. He was the only BJP MLA who retained his seat in the 2013 Election from the Vishwas Nagar constituency winning over AAP’s Atul Gupta by a margin of 15,000 votes.

Soon after OP Sharma’s picture went viral on the internet, social media users slammed the MLA for drinking on duty. One user wrote that BJP MLAs have no time to work for their area, but plenty of time to spill liquor.

Another user wrote MLA walking free after getting drunk on duty is shameful. Yet another user called it the true face of the BJP which always play with people’s emotions for their own benefits.

Ruckus in Karnataka Assembly: 18 BJP MLAs suspended for six months amid honeytrap showdown

Parameshwara echoed this, noting Rajanna’s intent to lodge a complaint, though it was yet to materialise. “I’ve committed to a high-level investigation and will consult the CM on its nature,” he said.

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly was thrown into disarray on Friday as at least 18 BJP MLAs faced suspension for allegedly causing a ruckus. The opposition lawmakers demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into claims of a “honey-trap” scheme targeting a minister and other politicians. The uproar saw marshals escorting the suspended BJP members out of the chamber, as tensions flared over the explosive allegations.

The drama erupted shortly after the session began, with BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs storming the well of the House, brandishing CDs and chanting slogans. Their protest persisted despite assurances from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of a high-level investigation.

The opposition’s ire stemmed from Cooperation Minister KH Rajanna’s revelation on Thursday that he had been targeted in a honey-trap attempt, claiming 48 politicians across party lines had faced similar ploys. BJP leaders, unimpressed by the government’s response, insisted on a judicial probe, arguing the case’s gravity warranted impartial oversight.

Siddaramaiah sought to quell the unrest, telling the Assembly, “Home Minister G Parameshwara has promised a thorough probe. Let Rajanna file a formal complaint, and we’ll ensure protection for all members—Congress, BJP, or JD(S). No lawbreaker will be spared, regardless of status.”

He stressed the government’s duty to safeguard citizens, adding, “We’ll discuss the probe’s scope and act decisively.” Parameshwara echoed this, noting Rajanna’s intent to lodge a complaint, though it was yet to materialise. “I’ve committed to a high-level investigation and will consult the CM on its nature,” he said.

But the opposition, led by R Ashok, remained unconvinced. “What’s the intelligence wing doing under the CM’s watch? If ministers aren’t safe, who is? This demands a sitting judge’s inquiry,” Ashok thundered, pointing to Rajanna’s claims of widespread political targeting. BJP MLA Sunil Kumar had earlier set the tone, questioning the cabinet’s integrity. “A minister alleging a honey-trap in the House—what does that say about governance? Where’s the morality?” he demanded, urging clarity on the probe and protection for legislators.

Congress leaders, meanwhile, defended the suspensions, accusing the opposition of disrespecting the House by tearing papers and disrupting proceedings. Minister Priyank Kharge fired back, alleging similar scandals under the previous BJP regime went unaddressed. “They secured court stays then—why the outrage now?” he retorted, sparking a fiery clash between the benches.

India on track to become global consumption capital, reveals new report

India is on the path to becoming the world’s leading consumption economy, as household growth, tax reforms, and a booming Gen Z population fuel discretionary spending.

India is on the path to becoming the world's leading consumption economy, as household growth, tax reforms, and a booming Gen Z population fuel discretionary spending.

India is projected to emerge as the consumption capital of the world, driven by strong economic trends, rising per capita income, and a booming Gen Z population, according to a recent report by a media citing analysis from Angel One and Iconic Asset.

Household growth outpaces population rise

The report highlights that household formation in India is accelerating due to the increasing trend of nuclear families. This surge is outpacing overall population growth, emerging as a pivotal factor fueling higher consumption across sectors.

Currently, consumption constitutes 56% of India’s GDP, making it the most rapidly growing segment of the economy. Projections indicate that India’s consumption is expected to double by 2034, placing the country ahead of major global economies.

Future savings to unlock consumption potential

India’s economic landscape is set for a dramatic transformation with its total savings over the next 25 years projected at USD 103 trillion—a tenfold increase from USD 12 trillion between FY1997 and 2023. These savings are anticipated to unleash massive potential for incremental consumption.

Moreover, recent tax reductions in the Union Budget are expected to unlock ₹1 lakh crore, leading to an additional consumption boost of ₹3.3 lakh crore. This move alone could potentially add 1% to the national GDP, the report states.

A trajectory similar to the US and China

The report draws parallels with historical patterns seen in the US and China, where periods of rising per capita income triggered significant increases in discretionary spending. India is expected to follow a similar trajectory, with notable growth in categories such as consumer electronics, apparel, jewellery, and the experience economy.

Gen Z and modern retail: the next frontier

With 92% of retail trade still dominated by Kirana stores, the report underlines the untapped potential for modern retail to expand and gain market share. Furthermore, India’s Gen Z population already surpasses the total population of the US, and by 2035, every second rupee spent will come from a Gen Zer, adding a demographic edge to India’s consumption story.

India submits bid to host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed this optimism during a recent visit, declaring India’s “resolve” to host the 2036 Olympics and revealing plans for 10 major stadiums at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Patel Sports Complex.

India has thrown its hat into the ring to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a bold stride in its ambition to become a global sporting powerhouse. PT Usha, president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, formally submitted an expression of interest to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), nominating Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as the host city for the centenary edition of the prestigious event. This move comes as part of a larger vision that includes India’s bid to stage the 2036 Olympic Games, with a submission deadline looming on March 31, 2025.

In her letter, Usha emphasized Ahmedabad’s proven track record and infrastructure, positioning it as an ideal venue for the Games, last hosted by India in Delhi in 2010. “Ahmedabad has shown it can handle the spotlight, from hosting the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final to managing the massive crowds at the recent Coldplay concert,” she said. The CGF has acknowledged receipt of India’s intent, a step that strengthens the country’s case amid a competitive landscape where other potential hosts like Singapore and Malaysia have bowed out over funding concerns.

The bid follows a pivotal visit by CGF president Chris Jenkins and CEO Katie Sadleir to Gujarat from January 29 to 31, where they assessed Ahmedabad’s facilities and logistical capabilities. Their review came at a time when the CGF faced a hosting crisis for the 2026 Games, ultimately awarded to Glasgow after Victoria, Australia, pulled out citing financial strain. India’s proactive approach for 2030 underscores its determination to fill the void and cement its reputation as a reliable organizer of mega-events.

Gujarat’s emergence as a sporting hub is central to this narrative. On Thursday, state Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi told the legislative assembly that Gujarat is being groomed to host the Olympics, with Ahmedabad at the forefront. Seeking approval for a 2025-26 sports budget of Rs 250 crore—a 41 per cent increase from the previous year—Sanghavi credited Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for prioritizing athletic development. “Over the past year, Gujarat has successfully staged national and international competitions, proving our readiness,” he said, noting the construction of 23 districts and five taluka sports complexes, with 32 more in progress at a cost of Rs 370 crore.

The state’s sporting credentials are bolstered by a dramatic rise in achievements. “Two years ago, Gujarat’s medal count was in single digits. Today, we’ve secured 808 national and 104 international medals,” Sanghavi boasted, attributing the surge to initiatives like the Olympic Readiness Programme. Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed this optimism during a recent visit, declaring India’s “resolve” to host the 2036 Olympics and revealing plans for 10 major stadiums at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Patel Sports Complex.
