In yet another instance of a probable political killing in the country, a former Shiv Sena corporator – Ashok Sawant – was hacked to death on late Sunday by two unknown assailants in Mumbai. Reportedly, the Shiv Sena leader – who was a two time corporator from Samta Nagar – was attacked about 200 metres from his residence.
Though Sawant was rushed to the nearby hospital soon after the attack, the doctors declared him dead on arrival. The Samta Nagar police reached the scene of the crime as soon as they were informed and officials collected samples for forensic examination. A case was registered under IPC section 302 and the matter is under investigation. The police are also trying to determine whether there was a CCTV near the crime scene.
A case of murder has been registered against unknown persons. Vinay Rathod, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Zone 12, said that the body of the former corporator has been sent to the Shatabdi Hospital for postmortem.
According to media reports, the Shiv Sena leader, who was running a cable business, was receiving extortion calls for the last few days and the murder was probably linked to the threats.
The Shiv Sena leader’s murder came days after Deepak Rao – an activist committed to “Hindutva ideology” and associated with the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Dakshina Kannada district – was hacked to death by a four member gang, who targeted him while he was riding a bike at nearby Katipalla. Though the political affiliation of the victim was not primarily known, the state BJP wing has confirmed that the deceased – who was reportedly an executive in a mobile SIM cards distribution company – was linked with saffron groups.
According to the police the assailants came in a car and attacked Deepak while he was on the way to his workplace and attacked him with sharp weapons. Following a tip off hours after the killing probationary sub-inspector Sheethal Kumar Alaguru jointly with CCB inspector Shantharam and Panambur Police station inspector Rafeeq went on a chase for the suspects who were on the run.
Reportedly, two of the four suspects – Rizwan and Pinky Nawaz – sustained bullet injuries while attempting to flee police custody. According to sources, the police fired two rounds from their service revolver at the speeding car of the suspects and managed to stop them near Mijar in Moodbidri. All four suspects – Naushad Ullanje of Mulki, Rizwan, Pinky Nawaz and Nirshan – were taken to police custody.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
