The Union Home Ministry also asserted that Goldy Brar is backed by cross-border terror agencies and was involved in several killings

The Centre on Monday declared gangster Goldy Brar as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Issuing a notice, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that Goldy Brar is associated with the banned Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International.

The Union Home Ministry also asserted that Goldy Brar is backed by cross-border terror agencies and was involved in several killings, including making threatening calls to pro-nationalist leaders, demanding ransom and posting the claims of killings on different social media platforms.

Reportedly, the Canada-based terrorist had also claimed responsibility for the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022. In May 2022, Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district. Later, the police named Brar as the mastermind behind the murder.

The Ministry of Home Affairs also stated that Goldy Brar was involved in smuggling high-grade arms, ammunitions and explosive materials through drones from across the border and supplying them to sharp shooters to carry out killings.

Furthermore, the Ministry added that he and his associates have been conspiring to disrupt the peace, communal harmony and law and order in the State of Punjab through nefarious designs involving sabotage, raising of terror modules, carrying out targeted killings, and other anti-national activities.

Earlier, Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) for Goldy Brar’s extradition in June 2022, days after Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder.

Goldy Brar is known to be a close aide of Lawrence Bishnoi. Brar, who is based in Canada, is wanted in several criminal cases in India such as the killing of Faridkot District Youth Congress president Gurlal Singh Pehlwan in 2021. Reports said that the Delhi Police had arrested a relative of Brar in connection with Pehlwan’s murder.

Previously, media reports quoting police sources had claimed that Pehlwan was murdered in retaliation for the killing of Gurlal Brar, a former SOPU chief, in 2020. Gurlal Brar also happened to be a cousin of Goldy Brar.

Monsoon lands two days early in Kerala, the Northeast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the early onset of the monsoon over Kerala and northeast India, marking the commencement of the rainy season. This year, the monsoon arrived two days ahead of schedule, heralding above-normal rainfall expected from June to September. The IMD meticulously considered various parameters before officially declaring the onset of the monsoon.

The IMD’s announcement on Thursday signified the initiation of the four-month-long rainy season across the country. The simultaneous arrival of the monsoon over Kerala and Northeast India deviated from its typical schedule, reaching the mainland two days earlier than the customary date of onset over Kerala, usually observed on June 1st. This early arrival echoes a similar occurrence seven years ago, precisely on May 30, 2017.

The early onset of the monsoon carries significant implications for various sectors, including agriculture, water resource management, and public infrastructure. Farmers in Kerala and Northeast India can anticipate favorable conditions for crop cultivation, with the timely arrival of rainfall boosting agricultural output. Nonetheless, authorities must also remain vigilant against potential challenges such as flooding and landslides, which often accompany heavy monsoon rains.

Furthermore, the IMD’s announcement enables stakeholders to undertake necessary preparations and precautions to mitigate the impact of the monsoon season. Adequate infrastructure maintenance, disaster management strategies, and community awareness programs are essential components of ensuring resilience against the monsoon’s effects.

The early arrival of the monsoon in Kerala and Northeast India signifies the onset of the rainy season, bringing both opportunities and challenges for the region. As the country embraces the forthcoming months of abundant rainfall, coordinated efforts across sectors are imperative to harness the benefits of the monsoon while safeguarding against its potential adversities.
