A salon belonging to the franchise of celebrity hair stylist Jawed Habib was vandalised, on Saturday, by a mob led by Hindu Jagran Manch goons in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district.

The mob was protesting against an advertisement that had appeared in a Kolkata newspaper and had gone viral on social media on September 4. The ad showed several Hindu gods and goddesses seated in a salon and featured a tagline that said: “Gods too visit JH Salon”.

Incidentally, after the ad had gone viral on social media and hurt the sensibilities of the Hindutva brigade which trolled the celebrity hair stylist on Twitter, Habib had – in a video message posted on his twitter handle – apologised for hurting religious sentiments. On Saturday, as an angry mob led by Hindu Jagran Manch goons attacked a Jawed Habib salon franchise in Unnao’s in Motinagar locality, the outfit’s Regional Secretary, Vimal Dwivedi said that “sacrilege of Hindu gods wouldn’t be tolerated.” The mob also warned the owner of the Unnao salon to shut his business down.

Despite his apologies, the troubles for Habib haven’t ended. A police complaint has also been filed against him by a Hyderabad-based advocate, K Karuna Sagar, for “insulting and demeaning” Hindu Gods. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against the hair stylist under section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.

Similar police complaints have been filed against Habib in different parts of the country since Friday.
