In his 11th consecutive Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted the need for speedy probe in cases against women. Adding that he said those who commit monstrous crimes should be punished as soon as possible.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort, PM Modi said as a society, the country needs to think seriously about the atrocities being committed against “our mothers, sisters and daughters.” There is an outrage in the country over this, he said he can feel it. Country, society, and state government need to take this seriously, PM imphasised.
The Prime Minister said, “This is needed to build faith in the society. Whenever there is a rape or any crime against women, it is often gets discussed a lot. However, when such monstrous-minded people get punishment, then it does not get that much attention.”
Notably, his comments come in view of the recent incident from West Bengal’s Kolkata where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case is now being transferred to the Central probe agency, CBI.
In his speech, PM Modi further highlighted the working women paid maternity leaves which have been extended from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. “With Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, my specially-abled brothers and sisters feel dignity”, he said. “In Paralympics, they are reaching new heights as well. For our transgender community, we are making new decisions to make their lives respectful”, PM added.
Speaking on the recent political turmoil in Bangladesh, PM Modi said as a neighbouring country, he said he understands the worry regarding what happened in Bangladesh. He hoped that the situation would become normal there soon.
“The safety of Hindus and minority communities there must be ensured. India always wants our neighbouring countries to walk on the oath of peace and harmony. We are committed towards peace. We will always have best wishes for Bangladesh’s development journey in the coming days,” PM Modi asserted.
During his speech, PM Modi said he believes a discussion in the country must happen regarding laws that divide people on the basis of religion and become a reason for discrimination. On that note, he said that it is the need of time to have a secular civil code in the country. “We have spent 75 years in the communal civil code. Now, we should move to a secular civil code,” PM Modi said.
