Five wanted Maoists were shot dead in an encounter in Jharkhand’s Naxal-insurgency hit Chatra on Sunday, police said today.
An official statement by the Jharkhand Police said the five Naxals were killed in an encounter with the police in Chatra and two of the slain insurgents carried a bounty of Rs 25 lakh each, while the other two had a reward of Rs 5 lakh on their head.
They said that two AK 47 assault rifles were recovered from the killed Naxals, adding that the operation is still underway as the area is being combed for more insurgents and further details are awaited.
Local reports said that the security forces had received information that a group of Maoists had their hideout in the Palamu-Chatra border area and a joint operation was launched by Cobra 203 of the CRPF, Jaguar (Jharkhand Special Task Force) and Palamu-Chatra districts’ police
The joint team engaged in a gunfight with Maoists in the Lavalong area of Chatra and Dwarika area of Palamu on Monday morning in which the insurgents were shot dead.

Earlier on Sunday, three wanted Naxals were nabbed in a joint operation by the police and the DRG in neigbhbouring Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-infested Kanker district.
In an official statement, the Chhattisgarh Police said that three wanted Naxals identified as, Samund alias Suman Singh Anchala (42), Sanjay Kumar Usendi (27) and Parasram Dhangul (55) were arrested in joint operation by security forces.
Antagarh Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Khoman Sinha said that a joint team, acting on specific inputs about the presence of Naxals in the area, launched a search and grab operation and succeeded in arresting three insurgents from the forest under Koyelibeda police station limits.
The senior police official said the arrested Naxals are accused in several cases including setting construction vehicles on fire, torching cell phone network towers, and assaulting people who they claim are police informers.
He said that a case has been registered against the arrested Maoists under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation is underway, adding that the police is determined to wipe out Naxal insurgency from Chhattisgarh and its bordering areas.
