A delegation of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) led by President Aishe Ghosh will be meeting Ministry of Human Resources of Development (MHRD) officials on Friday. Meeting is aimed at restoring academic normalcy in the university and to discuss students’ related issues.
Earlier in the day the JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagdish Kumar met MHRD officals at Shashtri Bhawan. MHRD had sumoned the VC to take a stock of the violence that errupted on campus last week.
After the meeting with MHRD officials, JNU VC while interacting with the media said, “the situation in university is peaceful & normal. University will continue to function and conduct academic activities. We would like to help every student to continue their academic goals”.
JNU administration on Thursday late evening had issued a notice stating that students would not have to pay service and utility charges for the winter semester during registrations.
“As per the record of discussion held in MHRD on resolving the JNU issue on December 10/11, 2019, UGC will bear the cost of Service and Utility charges proposed till further orders,” read the circular issued by the registrar of the university.
The university students have been protesting against hostel fee hike since October last year.
This decision comes hours after students and teachers of the university kick-started a protest rally from Delhi’s Mandi House to MHRD demanding the removal of JNU VC Mamidala Jagadish Kumar.
Leaders of the left parties namely CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI General Secretary D Raja, RJD MP Prof Manoj Jha, CPI(M) Leader Brinda Karat were also present during the protest.
After an unsatisfactory meeting with the officials of MHRD, students then decided to march towards Rashtrapati Bhawan. The students were stopped midway and forcibly detained by the Delhi Police. A few students had reportedly received injuries.
Additional DCP of South-West Delhi alleged that he was bit by one of the protester.
Former HRD Minister and senior BJP leader Murli Manahor Joshi also urged the ministry to sack M Jagadesh Kumar, adressing his inefficiency at resolving the issue of fee hike in the university.
Joshi’s statement is significant as he is the first BJP leader who has issued a statement demanding Kumar’s removal.
A fringe group named Hindu Raksha Dal has claimed responsibility for the violence in the campus. Also, ABVP office bearer of JNU unit Anima Sonker on news channel Times Now had accepted that two ABVP cadres were moving around in campus with sticks in their hands.
Solidarity protests poured in from different campuses across the nation, with ‘apolitical’ campuses like St Xavier”s College, Mumbai and St Stephen’s College, Delhi also expressing solidarity with the students and teachers of JNU.
