Kamal Haasan makes Rajya Sabha debut, takes oath in Tamil

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan entered a new chapter in his political journey on Friday by taking oath as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Representing the DMK-led alliance, Haasan took the oath in Tamil, receiving a warm welcome with the thumping of desks by fellow lawmakers.

Haasan, who leads the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), was elected unopposed to the Upper House on June 12 with the backing of the DMK. Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, he expressed a sense of duty and pride, stating that he was going to take the oath and register his name in Delhi, and that he intended to fulfil the responsibility entrusted to him with the honour of being an Indian.

Haasan said he felt honoured to begin this new phase of his political journey and acknowledged the weight of expectations placed upon him. He noted that much was expected of him and expressed hope that he would be able to meet those expectations and would strive to remain honest, sincere, and speak for both Tamil Nadu and India.

Haasan launched the MNM in 2017, focusing on issues such as anti-corruption, rural development, and environmental sustainability. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, his party garnered nearly 4% of the vote share. He later contested the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Coimbatore South but narrowly lost to BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan.

While the MNM did not contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, it extended full support to the DMK, calling the alliance a need of the hour. The DMK-led government later embraced one of Haasan’s prominent policy suggestions by rolling out a Rs 1,000 monthly financial aid scheme for eligible women heading households.

Looking ahead, the MNM is expected to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led alliance, strengthening its presence in state politics.

Bengal withdraws Banga Bibhushan from BJP MP Nagendra Ray over Netaji remarks

West Bengal has withdrawn the Banga Bibhushan awarded to BJP MP Nagendra Ray after his controversial remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The West Bengal government has withdrawn the Banga Bibhushan, the state’s highest civilian honour, from BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Ray, popularly known as Ananta Maharaj, amid controversy over his remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The award was conferred on Ray on February 21, 2026, when the Mamata Banerjee government was in power. The state government said the honour recognises distinguished and exemplary contributions to the state and its people and carries a high degree of dignity and prestige.

Why Bengal withdrew the award

The decision came less than 24 hours after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to take stringent action, including arrests, against people making derogatory remarks about Netaji on social media.

Adhikari had also said that the law would apply equally to MPs, MLAs and government officials.

The directive followed remarks by Ananta Maharaj in which he described Netaji as a “war criminal” and questioned his leadership as well as the role of the Azad Hind Fauj in India’s freedom struggle.

What the Bengal government said

In its order, the state government said that “certain facts and circumstances” had emerged that raised questions over Nagendra Ray’s continued retention of the honour.

The government said the competent authority had concluded that retaining the Banga Bibhushan was inconsistent with the dignity, prestige and purpose of the award.

It therefore withdrew and annulled the honour conferred upon Nagendra Ray on February 21, 2026, with immediate effect. The order did not specifically identify the particular offence behind the decision.

Who is Nagendra Ray?

Nagendra Ray, popularly known as Ananta Maharaj, is a BJP Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal who hails from Cooch Behar in the northern part of the state and is a leader of the Rajbanshi community.

The withdrawal of the state honour comes amid controversy over his remarks concerning Netaji, a prominent figure in India’s freedom struggle and a revered personality in Bengal.
